A youth-focused political group in Osun East has appealed to residents of the senatorial district to forgive Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi over controversial comments that generated widespread criticism during the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The group, Osun East United for Good Governance, urged constituents to consider Fadahunsi’s record of service and developmental interventions alongside the controversy, arguing that one incident should not erase what it described as his contributions to the district.
The appeal comes days after another coalition of youths and concerned citizens staged a protest in Ilesa and announced moves to begin a process seeking Fadahunsi’s recall from the National Assembly over the same controversy.
The contrasting positions highlight the continuing debate in Osun East over the senator’s political future, with some constituents demanding accountability while others are calling for forgiveness and another opportunity to serve.
Group Calls for Forgiveness
In a statement reported on September 10, Osun East United for Good Governance appealed to residents to “forgive the past, remember the good, and give him another chance to serve.”
The group argued that Fadahunsi’s record of representation should also be considered when assessing his performance as the senator representing Osun East.
According to the group, the senator has facilitated a range of interventions across the district, including infrastructure projects, healthcare support, scholarships, youth and women empowerment initiatives, solar streetlights, transformers, bridges and rural roads.
The group also cited his reported involvement in facilitating a university for Ijesaland, as well as grants and employment opportunities for constituents.
It said these interventions should not be disregarded because of the controversy surrounding comments attributed to the senator during the election period.
The group’s position is essentially that constituents should assess Fadahunsi on his broader record rather than on a single controversial episode.
It stressed that it was not asking residents to ignore the controversy but was instead encouraging them to consider the senator’s overall contribution to the district.
Controversial Comments Sparked Backlash
The controversy surrounding Fadahunsi followed the circulation of a video from political activities in Ilesa ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.
In the video, Fadahunsi was accused of making remarks that were interpreted as a call for violence against members of the Accord Party.
The allegations triggered strong reactions from political actors, civil society organisations and security authorities.
The Osun State Police Command invited the senator for questioning after describing the reported remarks as threatening, inciting and intimidating. Fadahunsi subsequently appeared before the police in Osogbo.
The senator rejected the interpretation of the video, saying it had been deliberately edited or manipulated to misrepresent what he said.
Channels Television reported that Fadahunsi described the circulated footage as a “deliberate misrepresentation” and said portions of a longer speech had been taken out of context.
The controversy also attracted condemnation from groups including Amnesty International, which called for accountability over the remarks attributed to the senator.
Fadahunsi Later Apologised
The controversy did not end with the senator’s denial.
Fadahunsi later issued an apology over the tension generated by his remarks, while maintaining that he had never intended to encourage violence or attacks against members of the opposition.
Reports published in August said the senator explained that he had been speaking during a period of heightened emotion following reports of killings involving members of his political party.
He maintained that his comments had been interpreted differently from what he intended, but nevertheless apologised for the tension caused by the remarks.
That apology is an important part of the current debate because supporters of the senator have pointed to it as evidence that the matter should now move towards reconciliation rather than continued political confrontation.
The forgiveness appeal by Osun East United for Good Governance appears to build on that position.
Another Group Wants Accountability
The call for forgiveness, however, has not ended demands for accountability.
On September 9, a coalition of youths, students and concerned citizens from Osun East staged a peaceful protest in Ilesa over the controversy surrounding Fadahunsi.
The protesters marched from Enuwa Roundabout through parts of Ilesa before ending their procession at the gate of the Owa-Obokun Palace.
The coalition said the protest was part of efforts to begin a process to recall Fadahunsi from the Senate. It cited both the alleged inflammatory remarks and what it described as poor representation of the senatorial district.
TheCable also reported that some constituents had threatened to recall the senator over the comments made during the 2026 governorship election.
According to the report, Fadahunsi had apologised following the backlash but continued to maintain that he never called for chaos or violence.
The development means that the senator now faces competing political narratives within his constituency.
One side is demanding that the controversy should have consequences for his continued representation, while another is asking residents to consider his wider record and accept his apology.
A Debate Over Representation and Accountability
The disagreement in Osun East goes beyond the interpretation of a single political statement.
At its centre is a broader question about how elected representatives should be judged by their constituents.
Supporters of Fadahunsi argue that public officeholders should be assessed based on their overall record, including projects, interventions and their ability to attract government attention and resources to their constituencies.
Those demanding accountability, however, argue that development projects cannot remove the need for public officials to answer questions about statements that could potentially heighten political tension.
Both positions can coexist within a democratic system.
A representative can have a record of constituency interventions while still being expected to answer questions about controversial conduct. Similarly, calls for accountability do not necessarily mean that a person should be denied the opportunity to apologise or seek reconciliation.
The key issue is whether allegations are properly investigated and whether political disagreements remain within lawful and peaceful boundaries.
Why the Appeal Matters
The latest appeal is significant because Osun East remains politically sensitive following the violence and heightened tensions associated with the 2026 governorship election.
Political disagreements in communities can continue long after voting ends, particularly when allegations of violence or inflammatory statements are involved.
Calls for forgiveness could therefore contribute to reducing political tension if they are accompanied by accountability, dialogue and respect for the rule of law.
However, forgiveness and accountability do not necessarily have to be treated as opposites.
Residents can accept an apology while still expecting authorities to establish the facts surrounding disputed statements. Likewise, constituents can demand better representation without resorting to confrontation or political violence.
For Osun East, the challenge is to ensure that political competition does not deepen divisions among communities that must continue to live and work together after elections.
Fadahunsi’s Record Remains Part of the Debate
The group supporting Fadahunsi’s continued political relevance has placed considerable emphasis on his alleged developmental achievements.
It cited projects and interventions covering education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment, youth empowerment and community development across the senatorial district.
The group argued that his experience in the Senate and knowledge of federal institutions could continue to benefit Osun East.
It therefore urged residents not to allow the controversy surrounding the election-period comments to completely overshadow what it described as years of service.
That argument is likely to remain central to supporters seeking to defend Fadahunsi’s political future.
At the same time, the claims about projects and interventions should continue to be assessed against verifiable records, official documents and the experiences of constituents across the district.
What Happens Next?
The immediate political question is whether the competing positions will develop into a wider campaign over Fadahunsi’s future in the Senate.
The recall campaign announced by some constituents would have to follow the constitutional and electoral procedures governing the recall of elected lawmakers.
The forgiveness campaign, meanwhile, is likely to focus on reminding constituents of the senator’s developmental record and encouraging them to accept his apology.
For now, there is no indication that the controversy has disappeared from public debate in Osun East.
Instead, the latest development shows that the issue has entered a new phase — one in which accountability, forgiveness, representation and political reconciliation are competing themes.
The wider lesson for Osun and other parts of Nigeria is that political disputes should be resolved through lawful institutions, credible investigations and peaceful civic engagement.
As residents assess their representatives, the standard should remain clear: public officials must be accountable for their words and actions, while citizens should also have room to recognise genuine service, accept sincere apologies and pursue reconciliation where appropriate.
For Osun East, the coming period will determine whether the controversy surrounding Senator Fadahunsi becomes a lasting political fault line or an opportunity for accountability, dialogue and renewed attention to the needs of constituents.
