The Nigeria Police Force has announced the deployment of about 15,000 security personnel across Osun State to provide adequate security before, during, and after the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The Commissioner of Police in Osun State disclosed that the large-scale deployment is part of comprehensive security arrangements designed to guarantee a peaceful, credible, free, and fair election while protecting voters, election officials, observers, journalists, and electoral materials.
The police assured residents that security agencies are fully prepared to prevent violence, electoral malpractice, and any attempt to disrupt the democratic process.
Massive Security Deployment
According to the police, personnel drawn from various tactical and conventional units of the Nigeria Police Force will be stationed across all local government areas, wards, polling units, collation centres, and other strategic locations throughout the state.
The deployment will be supported by officers from other security and emergency response agencies working together under a coordinated election security framework.
The Commissioner of Police said officers have received clear directives to remain professional, impartial, and respectful of citizens’ rights while carrying out their duties.
He emphasized that security personnel would operate strictly within the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws governing elections.
Commitment to Peaceful Poll
The police leadership stated that the objective of the operation is to ensure that every eligible voter can exercise their constitutional right without intimidation or fear.
Authorities also assured political parties that all contestants would receive equal protection throughout the electoral process.
The command warned individuals or groups planning to cause unrest, engage in vote-buying, snatching of ballot boxes, destruction of electoral materials, or attacks on electoral officials to abandon such plans, stressing that violators would face the full weight of the law.
Restrictions on Movement
As part of election security measures, residents are expected to comply with any movement restrictions that may be announced by the electoral authorities and security agencies on election day.
The police advised members of the public to cooperate with security personnel by obeying lawful instructions and reporting suspicious movements or activities capable of threatening public peace.
Security checkpoints are also expected to be established at strategic locations to monitor movements and prevent the transportation of weapons or other prohibited items.
Appeal to Political Parties
The Commissioner urged political parties, candidates, their supporters, and campaign organizations to conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after the election.
He called on politicians to caution their supporters against violence, hate speech, voter intimidation, and actions capable of undermining the credibility of the election.
According to him, democracy can only thrive where political competition is conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Warning Against Electoral Violence
The police reiterated that no individual would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
Security agencies warned that anyone found in possession of dangerous weapons, engaging in thuggery, disrupting voting, or attempting to interfere with election officials would be arrested and prosecuted.
The command also warned against the spread of false information capable of inciting violence or creating unnecessary panic before or during the election.
Collaboration with INEC
The police said they are working closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to ensure seamless coordination throughout the exercise.
The collaboration covers logistics, intelligence gathering, protection of electoral materials, and rapid response to security incidents.
Election observers, accredited media organizations, and civil society groups are also expected to receive necessary security support while carrying out their responsibilities.
Residents Urged to Remain Law-Abiding
Residents of Osun State were encouraged to go about their lawful activities before the election and participate peacefully in the democratic process.
The Commissioner assured citizens that adequate arrangements had been made to maintain law and order across the state, adding that security agencies would remain on alert until the electoral process is concluded.
He further urged community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth organizations to support ongoing peace initiatives by encouraging dialogue and discouraging violence.
Importance of the Election
The August 15 governorship election is expected to attract nationwide attention as voters decide who will lead Osun State for the next four years.
Political parties have intensified campaigns across the state, while the electoral commission continues preparations for the exercise.
Security experts note that effective deployment of personnel, combined with intelligence-led policing and cooperation from citizens, will be critical to ensuring a peaceful election.
The police maintained that the security architecture put in place is intended not only to protect lives and property but also to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
As preparations enter the final phase, authorities have reiterated that every eligible voter should be able to cast their ballot freely without fear, intimidation, or interference.
