Two police officers attached to the Zone 11 Command of the Nigeria Police Force have been detained for investigation following allegations of brutality and an unauthorised invasion of students’ accommodation at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State.

The development followed a controversial police operation at a student hostel on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during which several students were reportedly assaulted and arrested.

The incident has raised concerns about police conduct, the protection of students’ rights and the use of force during law enforcement operations in Nigeria.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Tunji Ojedele, confirmed on Thursday that officers identified by the victims had been taken into custody for further investigation.

According to the police spokesperson, the detention was part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the involvement of the officers.

The development was reported by Punch Newspapers on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Police Detain Officers as Investigation Begins

The detention of the two officers followed complaints by the South-West Zone of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which accused operatives of the Zone 11 Cybercrime Unit of assaulting students during a hostel operation.

The student association described the alleged conduct of the officers as unprofessional and inconsistent with the standards expected of law enforcement personnel.

At least 16 students were reportedly arrested during the operation, according to the initial account published by Punch.

The allegations prompted the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Osogbo, Bassey Ewah, to intervene and order the immediate release of the arrested students.

Police authorities subsequently confirmed that the officers involved had been detained while investigations continued.

How the Hostel Incident Unfolded

The incident attracted public attention after video footage circulated on social media, allegedly showing police operatives physically assaulting a male occupant during the operation.

According to details reported by Punch, the footage showed two men dressed in black dragging a male adult, who was wearing only underpants, out of a building. One of the men was reportedly carrying a rifle.

The footage also showed the men repeatedly slapping the individual during the struggle, while a woman at the scene appeared to be pleading for him to be spared.

NANS separately alleged that officers forcefully entered a hostel occupied by male and female students, intimidated the occupants and physically manhandled them.

The student association further claimed that another student who attempted to record the operation from a nearby building had his mobile phone seized and was prevented from continuing the recording.

These accounts form part of the allegations being investigated. The full circumstances surrounding the operation, including its legal basis and the conduct of individual officers, have not yet been established through the announced investigation. Punch Newspapers +1

NANS Petitions Inspector-General of Police

Following the incident, NANS South-West Zone petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, demanding an investigation into the conduct of the officers.

The petition, signed by the association’s coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, also had copies sent to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and other relevant authorities.

The student body called for clarification on the identity of the officers involved, the whereabouts of the arrested students and the legal authority under which the hostel operation was conducted.

It also demanded that students who were allegedly assaulted receive medical examinations and that any seized mobile phones and recording devices be returned where they were not lawfully required as evidence.

Another major demand was the preservation of video recordings connected to the incident to ensure that relevant evidence remained available during the investigation.

NANS maintained that legitimate cybercrime investigations must be conducted within the law and should not be used to justify intimidation, unlawful entry or physical abuse.

Police Promise Thorough and Impartial Investigation

Reacting to the controversy, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Bassey Ewah expressed concern over the incident and said the police would not tolerate brutality, intimidation or abuse of authority by its personnel.

In a statement reported by Channels Television on November 5, the police leadership confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and that steps had been initiated to investigate the incident.

The AIG stressed that police officers must carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, restraint and respect for the fundamental rights and dignity of citizens.

He also warned that any officer found responsible for misconduct or violations of police regulations would face appropriate disciplinary action under existing laws and regulations.

The police leadership appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed.

The command further assured residents of Osun and Oyo states that accountability and public confidence remained important priorities. Channels Television +1

Arrested Students Released, Assaulted Student Receives Treatment

One significant development following the intervention of the Zone 11 leadership was the release of the students arrested during the operation.

Police spokesperson Olanrewaju Ojedele confirmed that all suspects arrested in connection with the incident had been released.

He also disclosed that the student who was allegedly assaulted had been taken to a clinic for medical treatment before being released.

The Assistant Inspector-General’s intervention followed a meeting with representatives of the student community, during which he assured them that the allegations would receive a thorough and impartial investigation.

The release of the students and detention of the officers represent important developments in the case. However, they do not by themselves establish the full circumstances of the alleged misconduct or determine individual responsibility.

Why the Osun Police Incident Matters

The incident has renewed attention on police accountability and the protection of fundamental rights during law enforcement operations in Nigeria.

Police officers have statutory responsibilities to investigate crimes, maintain public order and protect lives and property. However, those responsibilities must be exercised within the law and with respect for the rights of citizens.

Student accommodation is also a particularly sensitive environment because residents have legitimate expectations of personal safety and privacy.

Where law enforcement authorities need to conduct searches or make arrests, the applicable legal procedures and safeguards remain important.

The allegations involving the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, therefore raise questions about the conduct of the operation, the treatment of the students and the handling of evidence recorded by witnesses.

The investigation will be important in determining whether the officers acted within their lawful authority and whether any disciplinary or other legal action is necessary.

The case also presents an opportunity for the police leadership to demonstrate that allegations of misconduct involving its personnel can be investigated transparently, regardless of the officers’ positions or assignments.

What Happens Next?

The Zone 11 Police Headquarters is expected to continue investigating the conduct of the detained officers and establish the circumstances surrounding the hostel operation.

The police have also indicated that the outcome of the investigation will be made public when it is concluded.

Key issues requiring clarification include the legal authorisation for the operation, the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, the handling of students’ mobile phones and whether any officers breached established police regulations.

As of November 7, 2026, the police have confirmed the detention of the officers and the release of the arrested students. No final findings of the investigation or disciplinary sanctions have been publicly announced in the reports reviewed by Weng Global.

The case will remain significant for students, civil society organisations and Nigerians concerned about police accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
