The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with separate alleged sexual abuse cases involving four girls and a 13-year-old boy across different communities in Bauchi State, Nigeria.
The reported incidents involved children aged between four and 17, with the suspects ranging in age from 18 to 44. The arrests followed complaints from parents and family members between October 20 and November 5, 2026.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Friday, November 6, saying the victims had received medical attention while investigations continued.
The cases were reported in Disina Village in Yana Local Government Area, Tudun Gambo in Alkaleri, Gwaram Village in Misau, Atawari Village in Gadau District and Dangara Village in Toro Local Government Area.
Five Separate Cases Reported Across Bauchi
According to the police, the first case involved an eight-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted at Disina Village, Yana Local Government Area.
Habib said the girl’s father reported the incident to the police on November 2, two days after the alleged assault.
Police operatives subsequently visited the location, arranged medical attention for the child at General Hospital, Yana, and arrested a 44-year-old suspect identified as Shawilu Liman.
In another incident, police arrested an 18-year-old suspect, Zakariya Auwal, following a report involving a four-year-old girl at Tudun Gambo in Alkaleri Local Government Area.
The complaint was received on October 20. Police said the child was taken to Tudun Gambo Health Care Centre for medical examination and treatment.
A third case was reported on November 4, involving a six-year-old girl at Gwaram Village in Misau Local Government Area.
According to the police spokesperson, the child was allegedly lured to a farm and sexually assaulted. A 19-year-old suspect, Idris Sani, was arrested, while the victim was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Misau, for medical attention.
13-Year-Old Boy Among the Victims
The police also confirmed a case involving a 13-year-old boy at Atawari Village in Gadau District.
Habib said the boy was allegedly lured into a room and sexually assaulted on November 5.
Following the report, police arrested a 40-year-old suspect identified as Mansur Sha’aibu, who is from Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
The victim was taken to General Hospital, Azare, for medical examination.
The incident is particularly significant because it highlights that boys, as well as girls, can become victims of sexual violence and require appropriate protection, medical care and psychosocial support.
17-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Assaulted in Toro
The fifth case involved a 17-year-old girl at Dangara Village in Toro Local Government Area.
According to the police, the girl’s father reported on November 3 that she had allegedly been raped in a bush while tending her family’s cattle.
Police subsequently arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Michael Soja, who is from the same village.
Both the suspect and the victim were taken to General Hospital, Toro, for medical examination.
The police did not disclose further details about the circumstances of the alleged incidents beyond the information contained in the statement.
Police Promise Prosecution and Support for Victims
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed that all five suspects were in custody as investigations continued.
Habib said the suspects would be charged before a court upon the completion of investigations.
The command also said the victims had received medical attention and that arrangements were being made with relevant stakeholders to provide them with psychosocial support and protection.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the reported incidents, describing the alleged offences as inhuman and a betrayal of the trust children place in adults.
He assured residents that the command would pursue the cases and work towards ensuring that those found responsible face the law.
The commissioner also called on parents, guardians, teachers, religious leaders and community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour or suspected cases of child abuse to the nearest police station.
He further encouraged parents and guardians to listen to children, take disclosures of abuse seriously and report incidents promptly, noting that early reporting can help preserve evidence and support investigations.
Why the Arrests Matter
The five arrests draw attention to the continuing challenge of protecting children from sexual violence, particularly in communities where children may depend on adults and other familiar people for their safety.
The cases also demonstrate the importance of accessible reporting channels, prompt medical intervention and appropriate psychological support for victims.
Child sexual abuse can have lasting physical and psychological consequences. Beyond investigating alleged offenders, effective responses require coordinated support from law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, families, schools and child-protection organisations.
For affected children, access to confidential medical care, counselling and protection from intimidation or further harm is essential.
The involvement of a 13-year-old boy among the reported victims also reinforces the need for child-protection awareness that covers both boys and girls.
What Happens Next?
The immediate next step is the completion of police investigations and the possible prosecution of the five suspects.
However, the arrests should not be confused with convictions. The allegations against the suspects remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
The police have yet to announce the outcome of the investigations or provide details of any court proceedings.
The command’s commitment to providing psychosocial support and protection to the affected children will also be important as the cases progress.
Weng Global will continue to follow developments in the investigations and any subsequent legal proceedings.
