The Adamawa State Police Command has strengthened security across Yola ahead of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s planned condolence visit to the family of the late former Governor of the defunct Gongola State, Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur.
The command has deployed additional personnel and operational assets, including armed police officers and armoured vehicles, to strategic locations in and around the Adamawa State capital.
The deployment is part of measures to ensure security and maintain public order during the Vice President’s visit, according to the Adamawa State Police Command.
Police Deploy Multiple Security Units
The police deployment was ordered by the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, personnel from several specialised units have been mobilised for the assignment.
The units include the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Intelligence Unit, Traffic Unit and personnel from various police divisions.
The command also announced plans for traffic diversions and stop-and-search operations in parts of Yola during the Vice President’s visit.
Police said the measures are intended to support the safe movement of people and vehicles and prevent any disruption during the visit.
The Commissioner of Police urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and comply with lawful instructions throughout the operation.
Police Warn Against Disruption
The command also warned individuals who may attempt to disrupt the visit or cause a breach of public peace to stay away from designated areas.
Police said officers would take appropriate action against anyone found attempting to undermine security or create disorder.
Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency channels.
The police said the security measures are focused on protecting lives and property while allowing the Vice President’s visit to proceed peacefully.
There was no indication in the police statement that the deployment was linked to a specific new security threat. Rather, the command presented the operation as part of its preparations for the movement of a senior federal government official and the expected activity surrounding the condolence visit.
Shettima to Pay Tribute to Bamanga Tukur
Shettima’s planned visit follows the death of Bamanga Tukur, a prominent Nigerian businessman, former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Tukur died on September 12, 2026, at the age of 90, according to a condolence statement issued by the Office of the Vice President.
The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation reported that Shettima had described Tukur’s death as a major loss to Adamawa State, Nigeria and the African continent.
The Vice President also highlighted Tukur’s contributions to Nigeria’s maritime sector, public administration, politics and African business development.
Tukur served as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority between 1975 and 1982. According to the Vice President’s statement, he played a role in the development of the Tin Can Island Port Complex and the modernisation of several other Nigerian ports.
He later served as governor of the former Gongola State and became national chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014.
Beyond domestic politics, Tukur was also associated with efforts to promote private-sector development and economic cooperation across Africa through organisations including the African Business Roundtable and the NEPAD Business Group.
Yola Draws Condolence Visits
Tukur’s death has attracted condolence visits from political leaders, government officials, traditional authorities and other prominent Nigerians.
The Adamawa State Government has received delegations paying tribute to the late elder statesman, while the PDP also visited his family, the Lamido of Adamawa and Governor Ahmadu Fintiri in Yola.
The concentration of dignitaries and visitors in the state capital has increased the need for coordinated security and traffic management.
The police deployment therefore comes against the backdrop of several official condolence activities connected to Tukur’s death.
