The Abia State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in separate operations targeting armed robbery, vandalism, and the unlawful possession of firearms across the state.
The police said the arrests were made during intelligence-led operations and routine patrols aimed at curbing criminal activities and improving public safety. Several exhibits, including locally made pistols, live cartridges, vandalized infrastructure materials, and other suspected stolen items, were recovered from the suspects.
The Command described the arrests as part of its ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state and warned that individuals involved in criminal activities would face the full weight of the law.
Suspects arrested in coordinated operations
According to the police, the suspects were apprehended in different locations following actionable intelligence and surveillance by operatives attached to various tactical units of the Command.
Some of the suspects are alleged to have been involved in armed robbery incidents, while others were arrested for vandalizing public infrastructure and illegally possessing firearms without the required licenses.
Police said investigations revealed that some of the suspects had allegedly specialized in stealing electrical installations and other public property, causing economic losses and disrupting essential services in affected communities.
The Command noted that the operations were carried out professionally, leading to the successful recovery of several incriminating exhibits.
Firearms and other exhibits recovered
Among the exhibits recovered during the operations were:
- Locally made pistols
- Live cartridges
- Suspected stolen items
- Vandalized electrical materials
- Other tools believed to have been used in carrying out criminal activities
Police said the recovered firearms and ammunition have been secured as exhibits while forensic examinations and further investigations continue.
Authorities added that efforts are ongoing to determine whether the recovered weapons had been used in previous criminal operations within or outside Abia State.
Police intensify crackdown on crime
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements across the state.
The Command said intelligence gathering, visibility policing, and collaboration with local communities remain critical to reducing crime and ensuring residents can go about their lawful activities without fear.
It added that officers have been directed to maintain increased patrols in identified flashpoints while strengthening surveillance in areas vulnerable to robbery and vandalism.
The police also assured residents that all suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
Appeal to residents
The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency channels.
According to the police, timely information from residents has continued to play a significant role in preventing crimes and facilitating the arrest of suspects.
The Command encouraged community leaders, youth groups, and neighborhood security outfits to continue working with security agencies to improve safety across Abia State.
Renewed commitment to public safety
The latest arrests come amid ongoing nationwide efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to combat violent crimes, illegal firearms possession, vandalism of critical infrastructure, and other offences threatening public security.
Security experts have repeatedly emphasized that intelligence sharing between citizens and law enforcement agencies remains one of the most effective tools in preventing criminal activities.
The Abia State Police Command maintained that it would continue to pursue criminal suspects wherever they operate and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
