China Raises Alarm Over US Weapons in Space

China has urged the United States to stop expanding its military capabilities in outer space after Washington publicly confirmed for the first time that the US Space Force has deployed “on-orbit space control weapons.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the call on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, warning against the further militarisation of space following the disclosure by US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink a day earlier.

Beijing’s reaction comes as competition between the United States, China and Russia increasingly extends beyond traditional military domains, with satellites and other space-based systems becoming critical to communications, navigation, intelligence gathering, missile warning and modern warfare.

The United States has described its newly acknowledged orbital capabilities as defensive measures intended to protect American forces from hostile action. However, the decision to publicly acknowledge the weapons has raised concerns among experts that it could intensify an emerging arms race in space.

US Confirms Weapons Are Already in Orbit

The US disclosure came on September 14 during the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

Meink said the US Space Force now has “on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action.”

The statement represented the clearest public acknowledgement to date by a senior US official that American weapons designed for operations in space are already deployed in orbit.

However, Meink did not disclose how many systems are involved, when they were launched, what platforms carry them or precisely what the weapons are capable of doing.

US officials have also declined to clarify whether the systems are kinetic weapons, electronic warfare systems, jammers or other forms of counterspace technology.

The Space Force subsequently explained that its definition of space control includes both kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities that can be used to affect an adversary’s space systems.

It said such capabilities can be used for both offensive and defensive purposes.

That distinction is important because “space weapon” does not necessarily mean a conventional missile or explosive device stationed in orbit.

Some counterspace systems can interfere with satellite communications, sensors or other electronic systems without physically destroying the targeted spacecraft.

Why Washington Says the Weapons Are Necessary

The US government has linked its expanding space capabilities to what it considers growing threats from China and Russia.

The US Space Force says both countries are developing sophisticated space and counterspace capabilities capable of disrupting or degrading American space-based systems.

Its assessment states that China is developing military space capabilities as part of its broader military modernisation programme, while Russia is also developing systems designed to challenge US space capabilities.

Meink defended the US decision by arguing that Washington needs to be able to protect its forces in an increasingly contested space environment.

He said maintaining reliable access to space is important not only for military operations but also for broader economic and civilian activities.

The secretary also described the move as important from a deterrence perspective.

US officials have for years warned that American military operations depend heavily on satellites for communications, navigation, surveillance, intelligence and missile-warning systems.

A conflict that disabled or disrupted those satellites could therefore have consequences extending far beyond outer space.

China Calls for an End to Military Expansion in Space

Beijing has responded sharply to the US announcement.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun called on Washington to stop expanding its military capabilities in space and preparing for warfare beyond Earth.

China has consistently opposed what it describes as the weaponisation of outer space and has argued that space should not become another battlefield between major powers.

The latest Chinese warning reflects broader concerns that the deployment of operational space weapons by one major power could encourage rivals to accelerate their own programmes.

That could create a cycle in which governments increasingly develop offensive and defensive systems because they fear falling behind competitors.

China’s position is particularly significant because Beijing itself has rapidly expanded its space programme, including military and counterspace capabilities.

Recent assessments indicate that China is developing sophisticated satellites, spaceplanes and other systems capable of operating close to other spacecraft.

Reuters reported earlier in September that the United States and China are increasingly preparing for the possibility of military conflict extending into space, with both countries developing technologies involving manoeuvrable satellites and spaceplanes.

Russia’s Role in the Growing Space Competition

Russia remains another major player in the increasingly contested space environment.

While a new Russian statement specifically responding to the September 14 US disclosure could not be independently confirmed from the latest authoritative reporting reviewed for this article, Moscow has for years opposed the deployment of weapons in space and has repeatedly advocated international measures aimed at preventing an arms race in outer space.

At the same time, US officials accuse Russia of developing and deploying counterspace capabilities.

The US Space Force says Russia has conducted orbital manoeuvres involving military satellites and has developed systems that could threaten other spacecraft.

US Space Command has also previously said Russia is operationalising co-orbital anti-satellite capabilities, including satellites capable of approaching and potentially threatening high-value spacecraft.

The contradiction between arms-control calls and the development of military space capabilities illustrates the wider security dilemma facing the major powers.

Each side argues that its systems are necessary for defence and deterrence, while viewing similar capabilities developed by competitors as potential threats.

The 1967 Space Treaty and What It Actually Bans

The latest developments have also revived questions about international law governing military activity in space.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits countries from placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around Earth. It also establishes principles concerning the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.

However, the treaty does not impose a comprehensive ban on every form of conventional or non-nuclear military technology in space.

As a result, countries have continued developing capabilities that could be used against satellites without necessarily violating the treaty’s prohibition on weapons of mass destruction.

This includes technologies designed to jam communications, interfere with sensors, disrupt satellite operations or physically attack spacecraft.

The distinction has become increasingly important as satellites have become central to modern military operations.

Why Satellites Matter to Modern Warfare

Satellites are no longer simply scientific or communications platforms.

Modern militaries depend on them for a wide range of functions, including positioning, navigation, intelligence collection, surveillance, communications and missile-warning systems.

Commercial satellites can also provide services that have military value.

The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the importance of commercial and military satellite networks, while recent US-China developments show how major powers are increasingly considering the possibility of fighting for control of space-based infrastructure.

A successful attack against critical satellites could potentially interfere with military communications, reduce intelligence capabilities or disrupt navigation systems.

That makes space increasingly important to national security.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies has warned that space has become a central area of strategic competition, with countries increasingly developing capabilities designed to disrupt or degrade adversaries’ space systems.

Concern Over a New Arms Race

The greatest concern surrounding the US announcement is not necessarily the existence of one new weapon.

Instead, experts are concerned about what other countries may do in response.

If Washington deploys new orbital weapons and describes them as necessary to counter China and Russia, Beijing and Moscow could argue that they must strengthen their own capabilities to maintain strategic balance.

That could lead to increased investment in anti-satellite weapons, electronic warfare, manoeuvrable spacecraft and other counterspace systems.

The resulting competition could make Earth’s orbital environment more dangerous.

There is also a significant environmental concern.

Kinetic anti-satellite weapons can destroy spacecraft and create large amounts of orbital debris. Because debris can travel at extremely high speeds, even relatively small fragments can damage or destroy other satellites.

Such debris does not distinguish between military and civilian spacecraft.

A conflict in orbit could therefore threaten communication, navigation, weather-monitoring and commercial satellite systems used by countries that are not directly involved in the confrontation.

For this reason, experts have increasingly highlighted non-destructive and reversible forms of counterspace activity as potentially less damaging than physically destroying satellites.

The US Has Not Revealed the Weapon’s Exact Capabilities

Despite the significance of Meink’s announcement, many important questions remain unanswered.

The US government has not publicly identified the weapon system involved.

It has not disclosed how many weapons are in orbit, when they were deployed, which satellites carry them or what specific targets they are designed to engage.

Experts have suggested that the capabilities could include non-kinetic systems such as orbital jammers, although this remains speculation rather than confirmed information.

Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation told Ars Technica that space-based jamming technology could be one possible explanation, noting that China and Russia are also believed to possess such capabilities.

Other possibilities remain open.

Without additional official information, it would be premature to conclude that the United States has deployed orbital missiles or systems capable of physically destroying enemy satellites.

Why the Development Matters to Africa and the Wider World

Although the dispute is primarily between major military powers, its consequences could extend far beyond Washington, Beijing and Moscow.

African countries increasingly depend on satellite technology for telecommunications, broadcasting, weather monitoring, agriculture, navigation, financial services and internet connectivity.

Any major disruption to the global space environment could therefore have consequences for countries that have no role in the strategic competition.

The growing militarisation of space also raises questions for developing countries seeking greater access to satellite technology and space-based services.

As African states expand their own space programmes, including satellite development and Earth-observation capabilities, a more contested orbital environment could affect both the cost and security of those activities.

For ordinary citizens, the issue may appear distant because the weapons involved operate hundreds or thousands of kilometres above Earth.

But many everyday technologies ultimately depend on space infrastructure.

Navigation applications, telecommunications, weather information, financial networks, aviation and maritime systems can all rely on satellites.

What Happens Next?

The immediate question is whether the US disclosure will lead to further announcements about the capabilities already deployed in orbit.

Washington is unlikely to reveal sensitive technical information about systems it regards as strategic military assets.

China, meanwhile, is expected to continue pressing for restrictions on the weaponisation of outer space while developing its own space capabilities.

Russia is also likely to remain an important factor in discussions over strategic stability and counterspace weapons.

The development could increase pressure for renewed international negotiations on preventing an arms race in outer space.

For now, however, there is no indication that the major powers are stepping back from military competition in space.

Instead, the September 14 US disclosure and China’s response a day later underline how quickly outer space is becoming a central arena of strategic competition.

The United States says its weapons are necessary to defend its forces and deter hostile action.

China warns that Washington should stop preparing for war in space.

The unresolved question is whether those competing positions will eventually encourage greater international cooperation—or accelerate a new phase of military competition beyond Earth.
