The Nigerian Army has explained the circumstances that delayed its response to the recent attack on a school in Kogi State, saying the isolated location of the institution significantly affected the speed at which troops could intervene during the incident.
Military authorities said the school is situated in a remote area with limited road access, making it difficult for security personnel to arrive immediately after receiving distress information. The clarification follows public concerns over the security response after armed attackers invaded the school and abducted four people.
According to the Army, troops were mobilised as soon as intelligence about the attack was received. However, challenging terrain, poor road networks and the considerable distance between the nearest military formation and the school delayed the arrival of security personnel.
The Commander overseeing military operations in the area said the incident should not be interpreted as negligence on the part of the armed forces but rather as a reflection of the logistical realities faced by security agencies operating in remote communities.
He explained that while the military maintains rapid response capabilities across the country, some rural locations remain difficult to access quickly, especially during emergencies requiring immediate deployment.
“The location of the school is far from our operational base. Once information reached us, troops moved without delay, but the difficult terrain and distance affected response time,” the commander said.
Attack Raises Fresh Security Concerns
The attack occurred when suspected armed kidnappers stormed the school, creating panic among students, teachers and nearby residents.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived unexpectedly, firing sporadically to scare residents before abducting four victims. The incident triggered fear within the community, with many parents rushing to the school in search of their children.
Although security forces eventually reached the area, the gunmen had already escaped into nearby forests, a pattern frequently seen in kidnapping operations across parts of North Central Nigeria.
The Army noted that immediately after arriving at the scene, troops launched pursuit operations alongside other security agencies and local vigilante groups in an effort to rescue the abducted victims.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Military authorities disclosed that search-and-rescue operations remain ongoing, with troops combing surrounding forests and suspected criminal hideouts.
The commander assured residents that security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the victims are rescued safely while intensifying pressure on criminal groups operating within the region.
He urged members of the public to provide credible intelligence capable of assisting ongoing operations, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in tackling insecurity.
According to him, local residents often possess valuable information about suspicious movements that can help security agencies prevent attacks before they occur.
Community Calls for Better Security
The incident has renewed calls for stronger security around schools located in rural communities.
Parents, community leaders and education stakeholders have expressed concern over the vulnerability of schools situated far from major towns and security formations.
Some residents argued that schools in isolated locations should have dedicated security arrangements to deter criminal attacks and reassure students and teachers.
Others urged federal and state authorities to improve road infrastructure leading to rural communities, noting that better accessibility would enhance emergency response by both military and other security agencies.

He also appealed to citizens not to lose confidence in the armed forces, emphasizing that security challenges require sustained cooperation between government agencies and local communities.
According to him, modern security operations rely heavily on timely intelligence from residents, technological surveillance and coordinated responses involving multiple agencies.

The latest attack has increased pressure on authorities to strengthen security around educational institutions and address the persistent threat posed by kidnapping gangs.
