The Ogun State Police Command has killed a suspected armed robber and recovered two vehicles, a locally fabricated pistol, ammunition and several items believed to have been stolen following a gun battle in the Ijaba area of Iyesi, Ota, Ogun State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, after police operatives responded to a distress call from a resident reporting an ongoing robbery operation in the area.
According to the police, the suspected robbers opened fire when officers arrived at the scene, triggering an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of one suspect, while other members of the gang escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
The development was disclosed by the Ogun State Police Command through its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, who said the operation was carried out by officers attached to the Onipanu Division under the Ota Area Command.
How the Police Operation Unfolded
The police said the responding patrol team mobilised to Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, at approximately 1:45 a.m. following information from a concerned resident.
Upon arrival, the officers reportedly encountered armed suspects who opened fire on sighting the police team.
The officers responded, leading to a gun duel during which one of the suspected robbers was shot dead.
Other members of the group reportedly fled the scene with suspected gunshot wounds, prompting the command to intensify efforts to locate and arrest them.
The police described the intervention as a response to an ongoing robbery attack, although investigations are still required to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and the activities of the suspected gang.
Two Vehicles, Firearm and Suspected Stolen Items Recovered
Following the exchange of gunfire, police operatives conducted a search of the area and recovered two vehicles identified as a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry.
The command also reported recovering a locally fabricated pistol, two live cartridges and seven expended cartridges.
Other items suspected to have been stolen included HP and Dell laptops, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones, a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio, a Wi-Fi device, clothing and an OPay ATM card.
Additional items recovered from the deceased suspect included a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number (NIN) cards and cash.
The police have not publicly established the owners of all the recovered property. They said investigations were ongoing to determine the ownership of the vehicles and other exhibits and establish whether they were connected to other criminal activities.
Police Launch Manhunt for Fleeing Suspects
The Ogun State Police Command said it had intensified efforts to track down the fleeing members of the suspected robbery gang, particularly those believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.
The investigation is also expected to establish the identities of the suspects, determine the origin of the recovered property and identify any possible links to other robbery incidents in the area.
The command has urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and criminal activities to security agencies.
Follow-Up Operation Leads to Recovery of AK-47 Rifle
In a related development, the Ogun State Police Command announced another recovery on November 2, following the initial operation in Ota.
According to a subsequent police statement, operatives recovered a Mercedes-Benz GLK, an AK-47 rifle and two rounds of 7.62mm ammunition during a follow-up operation.
The police said a search of the unregistered vehicle led to the discovery of the rifle and ammunition.
The recovered vehicle and exhibits were secured as investigations continued.
The additional recovery represents a significant development in the investigation, as authorities seek to establish whether the firearm and vehicle are connected to the suspected robbery gang involved in the November 1 incident.
However, the police have not publicly established the identities of all the individuals connected to the recovered items.
Police Commissioner Commends Operatives
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the operation for their prompt response, professionalism and courage.
The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, sustained patrol operations and rapid responses to security threats across the state.
He also encouraged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist investigations and prevent criminal activities.
The command maintained that public cooperation remains important in identifying security threats and protecting lives and property.
Why the Development Matters
The incident highlights continuing security concerns in parts of Ogun State, particularly the need for effective responses to armed robbery and other violent crimes.
Ota is an important commercial and residential area within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, making security operations and the protection of residents, businesses and motorists particularly important.
The recovery of vehicles, firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen household property also raises questions about the possible activities of organised robbery groups operating in the area.
For residents, the police operation demonstrates the importance of reporting suspicious activities promptly. However, the recovery of suspected stolen property also makes it necessary for investigators to establish ownership and ensure that recovered belongings can be identified and returned to their rightful owners.
The subsequent recovery of an AK-47 rifle and ammunition further underlines the importance of tracing illegal firearms and determining whether they are connected to other criminal activities.
What Happens Next?
The Ogun State Police Command has said investigations are continuing, with efforts focused on locating the suspects who escaped during the gun battle.
Authorities are also working to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and property and determine whether the exhibits are connected to other criminal incidents.
Residents who may have information about the suspects or the recovered property are encouraged to contact the appropriate security authorities.
The identities of the deceased suspect and the fleeing gang members have not been publicly established in the reports reviewed by Weng Global.
The investigation remains ongoing.
