The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged woman after a viral video showed her allegedly threatening police officers with a knife during a confrontation in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The woman was reportedly arrested following an incident linked to an alleged investigation into the sale of cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp.
In the video circulating online, the woman, who was wearing a green gown, is seen seated inside a vehicle while verbally confronting and cursing police officers whom she accused of repeatedly harassing her over the alleged sale of cannabis.
She later appears to leave the vehicle while holding a knife and moves towards a young woman who was apparently recording the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation, and the allegations against the woman have not been determined by a court.
Police confirm arrest
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the woman’s arrest on Friday.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said investigators had taken over the matter.
“The suspect has been arrested and the matter is already under investigation,” Babaseyi said.
The police did not disclose further details about the specific allegations being investigated or whether any officers were injured during the confrontation.
Incident reportedly occurred in Ijebu-Igbo
The incident was reported to have occurred in Ijebu-Igbo, the headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area.
Ijebu-Igbo has previously featured in Ogun State police reports involving criminal investigations and the recovery of weapons and suspected illicit substances. Police have, in earlier operations in the area, reported arrests connected to cult-related activities and the recovery of weapons and suspected Indian hemp.
However, those previous incidents are separate from the current case and do not establish any connection between the woman and other criminal cases in the area.
Justice ministry confirms expected court action
The Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, also confirmed that he had contacted the state’s Commissioner of Police concerning the viral video.
According to the information provided by the justice commissioner, the woman was expected to be charged before a court on Friday.
“I have contacted the CP over the viral video and I was told that the woman will be charged to court today,” Ogungbade said.
The exact charges to be filed against the woman were not stated in the information available.
What the video shows
The footage has drawn attention because it appears to show a confrontation between the woman and police personnel.
During the exchange, the woman questions why she was being targeted over the alleged sale of Indian hemp, asking why the officers were repeatedly troubling her.
She also makes curses and accusations against the officers before subsequently approaching the younger woman with a knife.
Because the incident is being assessed by investigators, the video alone does not establish the full circumstances that led to the confrontation or the events immediately preceding the recording.
Investigation continues
The police said the matter remains under investigation.
The arrest means the authorities can now investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the allegations relating to cannabis sales, the conduct captured in the video and any potential offences arising from the alleged threat involving the knife.
Any eventual charges and findings will be subject to the judicial process.
For now, the police have confirmed the arrest, while the Attorney-General’s office has indicated that court proceedings were expected to follow.
The case also highlights the importance of allowing investigations and court proceedings to establish the facts rather than treating claims made in a viral video as conclusive evidence of criminal conduct.
Why the case matters
The incident has attracted public attention because it combines allegations of illicit drug activity, a confrontation with law enforcement officers and footage that quickly circulated online.
Nigeria’s authorities continue to enforce laws against the unlawful possession and sale of controlled substances, while suspects are entitled to due process once they are arrested.
The distinction is particularly important in cases driven by viral social-media videos, where footage may capture only part of an incident.
As the investigation proceeds, further information from the police or the courts should clarify the allegations against the woman and the legal steps taken in the case.
