American actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in the hit television series Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36.
Panettiere’s death was confirmed by her representative to ABC News, with her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, also issuing a statement mourning the loss of his daughter. Her death was reported on August 16, 2026, just days before what would have been her 37th birthday.
The circumstances surrounding her death have not been fully disclosed. Major reports, including Reuters and ABC News, said no cause of death had been announced at the time of publication.
Her family has asked for privacy as they come to terms with what her father described as an unimaginable loss.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father said in a statement, describing her as an incredible light who brought love and joy to those around her and to millions of viewers.
From child star to Hollywood recognition
Panettiere began her entertainment career at a very young age, appearing in commercials and television productions before establishing herself as a successful actress.
One of her early notable roles came in the 1990s television soap opera One Life to Live. She subsequently appeared in Guiding Light and several films and television productions.
Her early film credits included Remember the Titans, where she appeared alongside Denzel Washington and other major Hollywood names. She also lent her voice to Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. Reuters noted that her work on the animated film contributed to a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for Children.
However, it was her breakthrough role in Heroes that transformed Panettiere into an international television star.
Fame through Heroes
In Heroes, Panettiere played Claire Bennet, a high-school cheerleader who discovers that she possesses extraordinary regenerative abilities.
The NBC superhero drama became a global television phenomenon after its launch in 2006, and Panettiere’s performance made her one of the show’s most recognisable young stars.
Her portrayal of Claire earned her multiple Teen Choice Awards and established her as a major figure among a new generation of television actors.
The character’s famous storyline and Panettiere’s performance helped make Heroes one of the defining American television dramas of its era.
Nashville showcased another side
After Heroes, Panettiere took on another career-defining role in the musical drama Nashville.
She played Juliette Barnes, a talented but troubled country music star whose personal and professional struggles formed a major part of the show’s storyline.
The role allowed Panettiere to demonstrate her abilities beyond acting, particularly through music. Her performances on the series helped establish her as a singer as well as an actress.
Her work on Nashville earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a television series, in 2013 and 2014.
The series ran from 2012 to 2018 and became one of the most significant television projects of her career.
Success on the big screen
Panettiere also built a notable film career.
She appeared in movies including Remember the Titans, Racing Stripes, Ice Princess, I Love You, Beth Cooper and the Scream franchise.
She played Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and later returned to the role in Scream VI, reconnecting with audiences who had followed her career since her younger years.
Her work also extended into video games, including voice performances in the Kingdom Hearts franchise and the role of Samantha Giddings in Until Dawn.
Reuters reported that her final acting role was in the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker.
A life marked by personal challenges
Away from the screen, Panettiere was open about several difficult periods in her life.
In recent years, she publicly discussed her experiences with postpartum depression, addiction and recovery. Her personal struggles became particularly difficult following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.
Panettiere later spoke about her decision regarding custody of her daughter and her efforts to focus on recovery and her wellbeing.
Her willingness to discuss difficult experiences publicly helped draw attention to issues surrounding addiction, mental health and postpartum depression.
Earlier in 2026, she released a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she reflected on her life, career, motherhood, addiction and recovery.
Family tragedy
Panettiere also experienced the devastating loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at the age of 28 from heart complications.
The loss added another painful chapter to the actress’s personal story.
Despite the difficulties she faced, Panettiere continued to work and speak publicly about rebuilding her life.
Hollywood mourns
News of Panettiere’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and people across the entertainment industry.
For many viewers, she will remain closely associated with Claire Bennet from Heroes and Juliette Barnes from Nashville — two characters that showcased different sides of her acting ability.
Her career stretched across television, film, animation, music and video games, beginning when she was a child and continuing into adulthood.
At just 36, Panettiere leaves behind a body of work that made her familiar to audiences around the world.
Her representative confirmed her death, while her family has requested privacy during the grieving process. The cause and circumstances of her death had not been publicly disclosed as of August 17, 2026.
Hayden Panettiere’s career may have begun in childhood, but her performances in Heroes, Nashville, Scream and numerous other productions ensured that her name would become part of Hollywood’s television and film history.
Her death marks the loss of a performer who achieved international recognition at a remarkably young age and continued to evolve throughout her career.
