Two people from Heipang District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State have been killed by suspected gunmen at a mining site around Kuru Jenta, near the boundary between Kuru Jenta in Jos South Local Government Area and Heipang.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, while the victims were at the mining site, according to community sources.
Attack Reported at Kuru Jenta Mining Site
The victims were reportedly from Heipang District, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed in the reports available as of Saturday.
A member of the affected community, Weng Bulus, confirmed the incident and condemned the killings. She also cautioned residents against engaging in mining activities at night.
According to Bulus, the victims were allegedly at the mining site during a curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government. She urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with restrictions on movement, warning that activities at night could expose people to security risks.
The identity of the attackers and their motive were not immediately established.
Community Calls for Investigation
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), also condemned the killings.
Tengwong called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
He further urged miners and other residents to avoid night-time mining and comply with security measures in the area.
As of the time of reporting, efforts to obtain confirmation from security operatives had not produced a response, according to the reports.
This means the account of the attack remains based primarily on community sources, and further official information could clarify the circumstances surrounding the killings.
Plateau Mining Sites Face Recurring Security Concerns
The latest incident comes against a wider backdrop of attacks involving mining communities in Plateau State.
In January 2026, seven people were killed in an attack on a mining site in the Kuru area of Jos South Local Government Area. The Nigerian Army said troops of Sector 6, Operation Safe Haven, responded after receiving information about the incident and recovered ammunition during a security sweep.
Other attacks have also been reported around mining locations in Jos South during 2026, highlighting continuing security concerns for communities and workers operating in areas where mining activities take place.
However, the circumstances of each incident differ, and the latest Kuru Jenta attack should not be assumed to be connected to earlier attacks without confirmation from investigators.
Why the Latest Attack Matters
Mining is an important economic activity in several parts of Plateau State, providing livelihoods for residents while also creating security challenges in areas where informal or night-time operations take place.
The latest killing raises questions about the safety of miners and residents around Kuru Jenta, particularly during restricted hours.
It also places renewed attention on the need for effective security presence, enforcement of lawful mining and movement regulations, and timely investigation of attacks against people working in mining communities.
For residents, the immediate concern remains safety and the identification of those responsible for the killings.
What Happens Next
Security agencies are expected to investigate the attack and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
An official account could also determine whether the victims violated any applicable curfew or mining restrictions and whether the attack was connected to broader security threats in the area.
Until authorities provide further information, the identities of the attackers, their motive and other possible details remain unconfirmed.
