BENIN CITY, Nigeria — Edo State Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa has called on young people across the state to reject cultism, drug abuse and other social vices, urging them instead to embrace education, hard work, discipline and responsible leadership as pathways to a brighter future.
The deputy governor made the appeal during a youth-focused engagement in Edo State, where he stressed that the state’s long-term growth and prosperity depend largely on the character, productivity and commitment of its younger generation. He encouraged youths to channel their energy into activities that promote personal development and community progress rather than crime or destructive behaviour.
Idahosa said young people remain one of Edo’s greatest assets and should take advantage of opportunities provided through education, vocational training, entrepreneurship and government empowerment initiatives.
According to him, meaningful development can only be achieved when young citizens embrace values such as honesty, integrity, patriotism and respect for the rule of law instead of being drawn into criminal activities.
He warned that social vices, particularly cult-related violence and drug abuse, continue to threaten lives, undermine economic development and create insecurity within communities.
The deputy governor urged parents, teachers, religious leaders and traditional institutions to work together in mentoring young people and helping them make positive life choices.
Education remains key
Idahosa described education as one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and unemployment, encouraging students to remain focused on their studies and develop skills that will prepare them for future opportunities.
