Amazon has announced an increase in minimum starting pay for eligible full-time core operations employees in the United States to $20 per hour, alongside new financial and grocery benefits designed to provide additional support for workers and their families.

The company announced the changes on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, saying the wage increase represents an investment of more than $1.5 billion in higher pay for U.S. core operations employees.

Amazon said the new minimum starting wage represents a $1-per-hour increase, while average hourly pay for its U.S. core operations employees will rise to nearly $24 per hour.

Amazon Raises Minimum Starting Pay to $20

The pay increase applies to eligible full-time employees in Amazon’s U.S. core operations roles, many of which the company says do not require previous work experience.

According to Amazon, average total compensation will exceed $32 per hour when the value of employee benefits is included.

The company also operates an annual step plan under which eligible employees receive pay increases during their first three years with Amazon.

Amazon said its minimum starting pay has increased by more than 17 percent over the past three years.

The latest increase comes as the company continues to invest in compensation and benefits for its large U.S. operations workforce.

Reuters reported that Amazon’s latest decision raises the minimum hourly base pay by $1 to $20 for eligible full-time operations workers in the United States.

New Lifetime Banking Benefit for Employees and Families

Alongside the wage increase, Amazon announced a new financial benefit known as Day 1 Financial.

The programme will provide eligible employees with membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union, giving workers access to banking services that they can retain for life.

Amazon said eligible employees, their spouses and their children will be able to access the benefit.

The company said the banking programme will include checking and savings accounts without monthly maintenance fees, overdraft fees or account minimums.

Employees will also not need a credit history to open checking and savings accounts under the programme.

Other features include access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs, mobile and online banking, direct deposit services and credit-building programmes.

Amazon said eligible users may also receive up to $300 annually in reimbursement for fees charged by out-of-network ATMs.

The programme is expected to begin rolling out in late 2026 and become broadly available in 2027.

Grocery Discounts Coming for U.S. Employees

Amazon is also introducing a new grocery and everyday essentials discount for its U.S. employees.

Beginning October 1, 2026, Amazon employees in the United States will receive an uncapped 10 percent discount on eligible groceries and everyday essentials purchased through Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online.

The benefit will increase to 20 percent for eligible purchases made in Whole Foods Market stores.

Amazon said the discount can be combined with existing Prime member discounts.

The company said the programme is intended to reduce everyday expenses for employees and their families.

The grocery benefit forms part of a broader package of workplace changes announced alongside the new wage structure.

Amazon’s Existing Employee Benefits

Amazon said the latest measures build on benefits already available to eligible employees.

These include healthcare from the first day of employment for regular full-time workers, with an Essential Plan costing as little as $5 per week and $5 copays.

Employees also have access to a free Prime membership, prepaid education programmes, a 401(k) retirement plan with a company match, paid parental leave and flexible time-off arrangements.

Amazon’s Career Choice programme provides prepaid tuition of up to $5,250 annually through more than 475 education partners, according to the company.

The retailer also said more than 150,000 hourly employees have used its Brightside Financial Care service since its introduction in 2022.

Brightside provides employees with access to financial assistance, including help with budgeting, debt management, student loans and emergency expenses.

Amazon’s Broader Wage Investment

The latest announcement follows a series of pay and benefits increases Amazon has introduced for its U.S. workforce.

In September 2025, Amazon announced that it was investing more than $1 billion to raise pay and reduce healthcare costs for U.S. fulfillment and transportation employees.

At the time, the company said average pay for those employees would increase to more than $23 per hour, while average total compensation would rise above $30 per hour when benefits were included.

The 2026 announcement therefore represents another increase in Amazon’s stated investment in compensation for its U.S. operations workforce.

Why the Changes Matter

The latest measures affect more than basic hourly wages.

By combining higher starting pay with banking services, grocery discounts, healthcare support, education programmes and retirement benefits, Amazon is expanding the range of compensation and workplace benefits available to eligible U.S. operations employees.

The company says the changes are intended to help employees and their families make their earnings go further.

For workers, the immediate financial effect will vary depending on their existing wage, position, location and eligibility for the different programmes.

The $20 minimum applies specifically to eligible full-time core operations roles in the United States and should not be interpreted as a universal wage for every Amazon employee or contractor.

What Happens Next

The new $20-per-hour minimum starting pay is part of Amazon’s latest compensation changes for eligible U.S. full-time core operations employees.

The Day 1 Financial banking benefit is scheduled to begin rolling out in late 2026 before becoming broadly available in 2027.

The new grocery discount is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026, with employees receiving 10 percent off eligible online purchases and 20 percent off eligible in-store purchases at Whole Foods Market.

Amazon said the new measures are part of its broader effort to strengthen compensation and benefits for its U.S. operations workforce.
