Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi on Sunday watched from the stands as Ikorodu City secured a 2-0 victory over Enugu Rangers in a Nigeria Premier Football League fixture in Lagos.
The match was played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, where Obi was seen alongside Ikorodu City FC President Sanmi Doherty as the Lagos-based club defeated the reigning NPFL champions.
The fixture formed part of the league’s Matchday 6 programme and brought together two sides with contrasting recent results heading into the encounter. The Nigeria Premier Football League fixture list confirms the meeting took place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on September 27.
Obi Attends NPFL Fixture in Lagos
Obi’s appearance at the match placed the former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate in a sporting setting rather than at a political event.
According to PUNCH, Obi attended the fixture and watched the game from the stadium stands alongside Doherty as Ikorodu City recorded the 2-0 victory.
The visit also highlighted the growing visibility of football as part of public life in Lagos, where NPFL clubs continue to attract supporters, public figures and community interest.
Ikorodu City have emerged as one of the clubs representing Lagos in Nigeria’s top-flight football competition, with their home fixtures played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Ikorodu City Claim Important Victory
The 2-0 result gave Ikorodu City a significant home victory against a Rangers side that entered the match with a strong recent record.
Before the fixture, Rangers had won their previous three NPFL matches, including a 2-1 victory over Nasarawa United, a 4-2 win against Kun Khalifat and a 1-0 victory over Ranchers Bees. The club’s official website also recorded the team’s recent run ahead of the trip to Lagos.
Ikorodu City, meanwhile, had drawn 2-2 away to Abia Warriors, played out a goalless draw against Barau FC and lost 2-1 to Bendel Insurance in their preceding league matches.
The victory therefore marked a positive response from the Lagos side after their defeat at Bendel Insurance.
Rangers’ Recent Dominance Over Ikorodu City
The result also ended a period in which Enugu Rangers had held the advantage in recent meetings between the two clubs.
Available match records show Rangers had won the previous four encounters between the sides. The most recent meeting before Sunday’s game ended in a 2-1 Rangers victory over Ikorodu City on May 24, 2026.
Rangers had also beaten Ikorodu City 2-1 in December 2025 and 2-0 in February 2025, while the September 2024 meeting ended 1-0 in Rangers’ favour.
That history made Sunday’s victory particularly notable for Ikorodu City, who were able to reverse the recent head-to-head pattern on their home ground.
Why the Result Matters
For Ikorodu City, the victory provides three important league points and strengthens the club’s position as it continues its campaign in the 2026/27 NPFL season.
The match was also significant for Rangers, who are defending the NPFL title after securing the championship at the end of the previous campaign. Rangers’ official club information confirms that the team won its ninth league title and subsequently qualified for the CAF Champions League.
The defeat in Lagos therefore represents an important setback in the defending champions’ early-season campaign, while Ikorodu City’s victory gives the Lagos club momentum as the season progresses.
Obi’s Presence Draws Attention
Obi’s attendance added a political dimension to public interest surrounding the fixture, although the immediate event was a sporting engagement.
The presidential candidate has maintained a high public profile since the 2023 general election and has remained active in Nigeria’s political space. His appearance at the football match, however, was reported in connection with his attendance at the NPFL fixture rather than a political campaign activity.

The result sets up the next phase of the NPFL campaign for both clubs.
Ikorodu City are scheduled to face Sporting Lagos away on September 30 before travelling to meet Rivers United on October 4. Rangers are scheduled to visit Warri Wolves on September 30 before facing Abia Warriors on October 4, according to available fixture records.
Rangers also have continental commitments ahead, with the club scheduled to continue its CAF Champions League campaign later in October.
For Ikorodu City, the focus will now shift to maintaining the momentum gained from defeating the defending champions, while Rangers will look to respond in their next league fixture.
