Nigerian athletes competing at the 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Oregon, United States, have attributed some of their disappointing performances at the competition to jet lag and their late arrival at the venue.

The World Athletics U-20 Championships Oregon 26 is taking place at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon from August 5 to 9, bringing together more than 1,700 young athletes from countries around the world.

For Nigeria, the championships represent another opportunity for some of the countryโ€™s most promising young athletes to announce themselves on the global stage. However, some members of the Nigerian contingent have struggled to reproduce the performances that earned them qualification for the prestigious competition.

According to reports, the athletes believe the difficulties surrounding their travel and arrival in Oregon affected their preparation and ability to adjust before competing.

Jet lag can be particularly challenging for athletes travelling across several time zones. The disruption can affect sleep patterns, concentration, recovery and physical readiness, all of which are critical when competitors are required to perform at their highest level within a short period.

For young athletes competing at a global championship for the first time, the challenge can be even greater.

Unlike athletes who arrive several days ahead of competition and have enough time to adjust to a new environment, those who arrive shortly before their events may have limited opportunity to recover from long-distance travel.

The Nigerian athletesโ€™ concerns have therefore renewed attention on the importance of proper travel planning and preparation for the countryโ€™s representatives at major international competitions.

The timing of an athleteโ€™s arrival can have a significant impact on performance, particularly when a competition is held thousands of kilometres away from home.

Nigeria is participating in an event being staged in Oregon, on the western side of the United States. Athletes travelling from Nigeria face a lengthy journey and a substantial time-zone difference.

The adjustment requires the bodyโ€™s internal clock to adapt to a new sleep and activity schedule. For sprinters, jumpers and other athletes competing in events where small differences in reaction time, coordination and explosive power can determine the result, inadequate recovery can be costly.

The situation has consequently led to questions about whether Nigeriaโ€™s young athletes were given sufficient time to acclimatise before their respective events.

The complaints are not necessarily an attempt by the athletes to avoid responsibility for their results. Rather, they highlight the wider logistical demands associated with preparing a national team for an international championship.

At the elite level, preparation extends beyond training sessions. Travel arrangements, accommodation, nutrition, recovery, medical support and acclimatisation can all influence an athleteโ€™s ability to perform.

Despite the disappointing outings reported so far, Nigeria continues to possess considerable athletics talent at the junior level.

The country has produced several athletes who progressed from junior competitions to become senior international stars. The World U-20 Championships are designed precisely to provide young athletes with experience of competing against the best in their age category before making the transition to senior athletics.

World Athletics describes the Oregon championship as a major platform for the next generation of track and field stars. The 2026 edition is the 21st staging of the competition and marks its return to Hayward Field, which previously hosted the World U-20 Championships in 2014.

For Nigeria, the competition is therefore about more than the immediate medal table.

The performances of the young athletes could provide an indication of the countryโ€™s future prospects in sprinting, middle-distance running, field events and relay competitions.

Nigeriaโ€™s athletics programme has produced encouraging results in 2026, with several athletes making significant progress on the international circuit.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Oregon earlier this year, Nigerian athletes Kanyinsola Ajayi and Samuel Ogazi won the menโ€™s 100m and 400m titles respectively. Ogazi also set a Nigerian and NCAA record of 43.38 seconds in the 400m.

The achievements demonstrate that Nigerian athletes can compete successfully on the international stage when they have access to strong preparation and competitive opportunities.

That makes the struggles at the U-20 championships particularly significant, as stakeholders will want to ensure that logistical issues do not prevent promising athletes from showing their full potential.

The issue has also brought the broader question of athlete welfare into focus.

International sporting competitions require federations to consider the physical and mental demands placed on athletes before they compete.

For a young athlete, arriving in a foreign country shortly before an important race can create additional pressure. There may be unfamiliar surroundings, changes in food and weather, different training facilities and the psychological pressure of competing against athletes from countries with well-established athletics programmes.

Proper acclimatisation can help athletes manage some of these challenges.

The objective should be to ensure that athletes arrive early enough to rest, train lightly, adjust to the time difference and become familiar with their surroundings before competition begins.

For Nigeria, this could become an important lesson from Oregon.

If travel delays or late arrivals contributed to poor performances, future delegations may need more comprehensive travel schedules that allow athletes adequate recovery time before their events.

The pressure on young Nigerian athletes should also be viewed within the wider expectations surrounding the countryโ€™s athletics programme.

Nigeria has a proud history in international athletics, and successful senior athletes have created expectations that the next generation will maintain the countryโ€™s presence among the worldโ€™s leading track and field nations.

However, junior championships are also developmental competitions.

A poor performance does not necessarily mean an athlete lacks potential. Young competitors are still learning how to manage pressure, international travel, competition schedules and the demands of elite sport.

The Oregon championships could therefore serve as a valuable learning experience for the Nigerian contingent.

Athletes who struggled in their opening events can use the experience to identify areas requiring improvement, while coaches and administrators can examine the circumstances surrounding preparation and travel.

While jet lag and late arrival may have contributed to some disappointing performances, Nigeriaโ€™s athletics stakeholders will also need to examine other factors.

Long-term athlete development depends on consistent coaching, access to quality training facilities, sports science, nutrition, medical support and regular exposure to high-level competition.

Travel arrangements are only one part of the overall preparation process.

The success of Nigeriaโ€™s athletes at senior competitions in recent months shows that the country has athletes capable of competing at the highest level. The challenge is to build systems that allow that talent to develop consistently from the junior ranks to senior international competition.

The Oregon U-20 Championships offer an opportunity to evaluate that process.

Nigeriaโ€™s young athletes are competing against some of the best emerging talents in the world, with more than 1,700 athletes expected at the championships.

For the athletes themselves, the immediate objective will be to recover, adjust and finish the competition strongly.

For administrators, the bigger lesson may be ensuring that future Nigerian teams arrive at major international competitions adequately prepared, rested and ready to compete.

The disappointing performances may therefore become more than a setback. They could provide an opportunity to identify weaknesses in Nigeriaโ€™s preparation system and improve the conditions under which the next generation of athletes represents the country.

As the championships continue in Oregon, attention will remain on Nigeriaโ€™s young athletes and whether they can recover from their difficult start to produce performances closer to their true abilities.
