The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Samuel Ayetutu, has called on public relations professionals across Nigeria to embrace strategic communication as a critical tool for national development, institutional credibility, and sustainable socio-economic growth.

Ayetutu made the call while addressing public relations practitioners, industry stakeholders, corporate communication executives, government information officers, and media professionals during a professional engagement organized by the Lagos chapter of the institute. He emphasized that the evolving communication landscape requires practitioners to move beyond traditional publicity and adopt strategic, research-driven, and value-based communication approaches capable of addressing today’s complex governance, business, and societal challenges.

According to him, effective communication has become a defining factor in shaping public trust, strengthening democratic institutions, managing reputational risks, and fostering inclusive national development.

He stressed that public relations professionals occupy a strategic position in influencing public perception and promoting constructive dialogue between governments, organizations, and citizens.

“Strategic communication is no longer optional in today’s interconnected world. It is essential for building trust, strengthening institutions, supporting sustainable development, and enhancing national cohesion,” Ayetutu said.

Public Relations Beyond Image Management

The NIPR Lagos chairman noted that modern public relations extends far beyond media visibility and reputation management. Instead, he described the profession as a leadership function that helps organizations anticipate challenges, manage crises, communicate transparently, and engage stakeholders effectively.

He explained that organizations that invest in strategic communication are often better positioned to navigate uncertainty, maintain public confidence, and achieve long-term objectives.

According to Ayetutu, communication professionals should consistently align their messaging with organizational values, ethical standards, and measurable development goals.

He further encouraged practitioners to embrace data-driven communication planning, audience research, digital innovation, and continuous professional development to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive information environment.

Building Public Trust Through Ethical Communication

A central theme of Ayetutu’s remarks was the importance of ethics within the public relations profession.

He urged practitioners to uphold integrity, transparency, accountability, and professionalism while carrying out their responsibilities, warning that misinformation and poorly managed communication can undermine public confidence in both institutions and governments.

The NIPR Lagos chairman observed that trust has become one of the most valuable assets for organizations and public institutions. As a result, communication professionals must prioritize factual accuracy and responsible engagement with stakeholders.

He also encouraged members of the profession to become advocates for responsible communication capable of countering misinformation and strengthening public understanding of national issues.

Communication as a Driver of Sustainable Development

Ayetutu linked strategic communication directly to Nigeria’s broader development aspirations.

He argued that achieving sustainable development requires effective collaboration among government agencies, private sector organizations, civil society groups, development partners, and citizens. Such collaboration, he noted, can only thrive where communication is transparent, inclusive, and consistent.

He explained that communication professionals should help bridge information gaps, encourage civic participation, support policy awareness, and foster constructive conversations around economic growth, healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, innovation, and social inclusion.

According to him, strategic communication enables organizations to mobilize stakeholders around shared goals while promoting accountability and strengthening public confidence.

Adapting to the Digital Communication Era

The NIPR Lagos chairman also highlighted the rapid transformation of the communication industry driven by digital technology, artificial intelligence, social media, and changing audience behaviour.

He advised practitioners to continually update their knowledge and embrace emerging communication tools without compromising ethical standards.

Digital platforms, he said, have significantly increased both opportunities and challenges for communication professionals, making speed, credibility, and accuracy more important than ever before.

He added that while technological innovation has expanded access to information, it has also increased the spread of misinformation, making strategic communication an essential defence against false narratives.

Strengthening the Public Relations Profession

Ayetutu reaffirmed the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations’ commitment to advancing professionalism, capacity building, ethical practice, and continuous learning within the industry.

He encouraged practitioners to actively participate in professional development programmes designed to improve communication competencies and leadership capacity.

He also called for stronger collaboration between the institute, educational institutions, policymakers, businesses, and media organizations to promote communication excellence across sectors.

Industry experts have increasingly argued that effective public relations contributes significantly to institutional resilience, investment confidence, crisis management, and national competitiveness. Across Africa, communication professionals continue to play growing roles in supporting governance reforms, corporate sustainability initiatives, public health campaigns, and development communication.

Strategic Communication in Nigeria’s Development Journey

As Nigeria continues to navigate economic reforms, technological transformation, governance challenges, and expanding digital engagement, communication experts believe strategic public relations will remain indispensable.

Observers note that transparent communication strengthens relationships between institutions and citizens, encourages informed public participation, reduces uncertainty during periods of change, and enhances accountability.

For Nigeria’s public relations industry, Ayetutu’s message reflects a broader global shift in which communication professionals are increasingly viewed as strategic advisers rather than merely media managers.

His remarks also reinforce the importance of ethical storytelling, stakeholder engagement, evidence-based communication, and professional excellence in building resilient organizations and stronger societies.

For practitioners across Nigeria and the wider African continent, the call serves as a reminder that strategic communication is not simply about managing narrativesโ€”it is about creating meaningful connections, supporting sustainable development, promoting public trust, and contributing to long-term national progress.

As the communication landscape continues to evolve, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations maintains that professionalism, innovation, integrity, and strategic thinking will remain the foundation upon which the future of the profession is built.
