The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that it recorded 17,942 traffic violations through technology-driven monitoring systems during the first quarter of 2026, underscoring the growing role of digital enforcement in improving compliance with traffic regulations across Nigeria’s commercial capital.
According to a report by Punch Newspaper, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki revealed that the agency also conducted 4,900 physical enforcement operations during the same period as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and promote responsible driving across Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki made the disclosure while presenting the agency’s first-quarter operational review, highlighting the increasing adoption of intelligent traffic management technologies to detect violations and support law enforcement. He noted that the integration of surveillance systems with conventional patrol operations has strengthened LASTMA’s ability to monitor traffic behaviour and respond more efficiently to incidents on major roads.
The General Manager explained that technology has become an essential component of modern traffic management, enabling the agency to identify violations more accurately while reducing dependence on manual enforcement. According to him, the approach also promotes transparency by relying on electronic evidence gathered through traffic monitoring infrastructure.
The figures released by LASTMA reflect the agency’s broader strategy of combining digital innovation with physical traffic control operations to improve road discipline in one of Africa’s busiest urban centres. Lagos continues to experience significant traffic pressure due to its growing population, expanding commercial activities, and increasing number of registered vehicles.
