Harry Kane has confirmed that discussions over a possible contract extension with Bayern Munich are set to begin, opening the door for the England captain to remain with the German champions beyond the expiration of his current deal in 2027.

The development provides fresh clarity over Kane’s future after months of speculation surrounding his long-term plans in Munich. The 33-year-old striker has returned from his holiday and is now expected to sit down with Bayern officials to discuss the next stage of his career.

Kane’s current contract with Bayern runs until June 2027, meaning the club faces an important decision over the coming months if it wants to secure the striker’s services for several more seasons. Bayern have already made clear that they want him to stay, while Kane has repeatedly indicated that he is comfortable with life in Germany.

Recent reports suggest that the two sides are increasingly confident of reaching an agreement. The Bundesliga’s official website reported in July that Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen said both the club and Kane were keen to extend their relationship. Dreesen explained that the next step would be finding common ground between the expectations of both sides.

Kane ready for talks

Kane’s latest comments indicate that the long-discussed negotiations are now moving towards a more formal stage.

The striker joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 in a deal initially worth €100 million, ending his long association with the Premier League club. Since moving to Germany, he has established himself as one of the most productive forwards in European football.

According to Bundesliga figures, Kane has scored 146 goals in 147 appearances for Bayern in all competitions. His extraordinary scoring record has made him a central part of the club’s plans and strengthened the argument for extending his stay.

His performances have also changed the conversation surrounding his future.

When Kane initially moved to Bayern, there was widespread expectation that he could eventually return to England to pursue the Premier League’s all-time scoring record. However, his success in Germany and his growing comfort with life in Munich have made a prolonged stay at Bayern increasingly realistic.

BBC Sport previously reported that Kane had said his desire to return to the Premier League had reduced and that he could see himself remaining at Bayern.

Bayern want to keep their star striker

For Bayern, retaining Kane is about more than simply keeping a prolific goalscorer.

The England international has become the focal point of the club’s attack and one of its biggest global stars. His ability to score consistently, create opportunities and lead the attacking line has made him a key part of Bayern’s ambitions domestically and in Europe.

The club had already opened discussions earlier in 2026. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed in January that negotiations with Kane were taking place, although the club was not prepared to rush the process.

That initial contact appears to have laid the foundation for the discussions expected to resume now.

Bayern’s position has also been reinforced by Kane’s performances. The striker has continued to deliver at an elite level despite being in his thirties, making his age less of a concern than it might have been for other long-term contract decisions.

Reports published in recent days have suggested that Bayern and Kane could eventually agree a deal running until 2029, although the final terms remain subject to negotiation. The Times reported that Kane is expected to renew his contract through 2029, while Bayern are reportedly not planning a major change to his salary.

Why 2027 matters

Kane’s current agreement expires in June 2027, placing Bayern in a position where securing a new contract now would provide greater certainty.

If no agreement is reached, the situation could become more complicated as the final year of his contract approaches. Bayern would have to consider whether to continue with a player approaching the end of his deal or risk facing increased transfer speculation.

For Kane, however, extending his contract would offer stability at a club where he has already achieved significant success.

The striker helped Bayern win the Bundesliga title in the 2024-25 campaign and continued his impressive scoring form into the following season. His individual numbers have consistently demonstrated his importance to the team.

The major prize still missing from his Bayern career is the UEFA Champions League. That could be another factor in his decision to remain in Munich.

Kane moved to Germany partly because of the opportunity to compete for major European honours, and Bayern remain one of the strongest clubs in the competition. Staying could give him another opportunity to pursue the Champions League trophy that has so far eluded him.

Barcelona and other speculation

Kane’s contract situation has inevitably attracted attention from other major European clubs.

Barcelona have previously been linked with the striker, particularly as the Spanish club considered options for its attacking line. Such speculation increased while Kane’s Bayern contract remained unresolved.

However, reports have consistently suggested that Kane is comfortable at Bayern and that the German club remains confident about retaining him.

The Times has reported that Bayern never considered selling Kane and that the player’s focus has shifted towards winning more trophies in Germany rather than returning to England simply to chase individual records.

That represents a significant change from the narrative surrounding Kane when he first left Tottenham.

The striker spent years being linked with a move away from north London because of his desire to win major trophies. His transfer to Bayern finally gave him the opportunity to compete at the highest level outside England, and he has since established himself as one of the leading forwards in European football.

What a new deal would mean for Bayern

An extension would provide Bayern with continuity in one of the most important positions on the pitch.

It would also send a strong message about the club’s ambitions. Keeping a player of Kane’s profile would demonstrate that Bayern remain capable of retaining elite talent while building a team capable of challenging for major honours.

For Kane, a new contract would allow him to continue playing at the highest level while maintaining the stability he and his family have reportedly found in Munich.

The negotiations could therefore be less about whether Kane wants to stay and more about the precise terms of the agreement, including its length, financial structure and the club’s expectations for the remainder of his career.

Kane’s Bayern legacy already growing

Regardless of what happens in the negotiations, Kane has already established an impressive legacy at Bayern.

His goal record has been extraordinary, and his ability to adapt quickly to German football has strengthened his reputation as one of the world’s leading strikers.

With 146 goals in 147 competitive appearances for Bayern, his impact has gone far beyond expectations.

The next stage could now be deciding how long that partnership will continue.

If Bayern and Kane reach an agreement on a contract extension, the move would effectively end much of the uncertainty surrounding his future and allow both player and club to concentrate fully on their sporting ambitions.

For Bayern supporters, the prospect of seeing Kane remain in Munich beyond 2027 will be welcome news. For the club, securing the striker’s future could be one of its most important off-field priorities.

For Kane, meanwhile, the decision could define the final major chapter of his club career.

As negotiations begin, the direction appears increasingly clear: rather than preparing for an immediate departure from Bavaria, Kane is preparing to discuss how much longer he can continue leading Bayern’s attack.
