Cassius Newton, the 34-year-old son of former Chelsea midfielder and coach Eddie Newton, died alongside his friend during a hike in the United Arab Emirates after they were exposed to extreme heat, an inquest in England has heard.

Newton and his friend, 33-year-old Aran Martinson, died on July 18, 2026, after setting out for a morning hike in Wadi Naqab, a mountainous desert area in Ras Al Khaimah.

The two men had been living and working in the United Arab Emirates and reportedly began their hike at around 7am local time.

What Happened to Cassius Newton?

According to evidence presented at the inquest in Chelmsford, Newton had gone hiking with Martinson in Wadi Naqab, where temperatures were reported to have risen above 40°C, with some reports putting the heat at around 50°C.

Essex area coroner Michelle Brown said Newton’s wife, who was in the United Kingdom, became concerned after she stopped hearing from him and reported him missing.

The coroner said the men appeared to have been following a recreational route that did not require specialist climbing equipment.

Search teams later located the two men several kilometres from their vehicle.

Newton was found approximately three to four kilometres from the vehicle, while his body was about 350 metres from Martinson’s.

Both men were taken to hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where their deaths were confirmed later that day.

Inquest Examines Extreme Heat

The inquest heard that the provisional medical causes of death for both men included cardiac and respiratory arrest.

The coroner also identified severe increases in body temperature, organ failure and heat stress caused by exposure to high temperatures as contributing factors.

The findings remain part of the inquest process, with the full circumstances surrounding the deaths to be examined further.

The men’s deaths occurred in Wadi Naqab, an area of mountainous terrain in Ras Al Khaimah that is used for outdoor activities and hiking.

The case highlights the dangers of strenuous outdoor activity in extreme temperatures, particularly in desert and mountainous environments where heat exposure can rapidly become life-threatening.

Cassius Newton’s Chelsea Connection

Cassius Newton was a former Chelsea Academy player and the son of Eddie Newton, who enjoyed a long association with the London club as both a player and coach.

Eddie Newton played for Chelsea before later becoming involved in the club’s coaching structure. He was also part of the Chelsea coaching staff during periods when the club won major honours.

Chelsea confirmed Cassius Newton’s death and expressed its condolences to his family and friends.

The club described itself as devastated by the death of its former Academy player and acknowledged his connection to Eddie Newton, who had represented and coached Chelsea.

Cassius had also played non-league football in England, with tributes subsequently coming from clubs connected to his playing career.

Friend Aran Martinson Also Died

Newton’s death occurred alongside that of Aran Martinson, who was 33 and from Essex.

Martinson had also moved to the UAE for work. His wife later paid tribute to him, describing him in a public message as hardworking and ambitious.

The two men were discovered by search teams after they failed to return from their hike.

Their bodies were found in the same mountainous area, with the distance between them reported to be about 350 metres.

What the Inquest Heard About Newton’s Wife

Reports of the inquest state that Newton’s wife was in the UK when she became concerned because she had not heard from him.

It is important to distinguish this from claims that she had pleaded with him not to go hiking.

The available inquest reporting says she became concerned after losing contact with him and subsequently reported him missing. It does not establish that she had warned or pleaded with him beforehand not to undertake the hike.

What Happens Next?

The inquests into the deaths of Newton and Martinson were opened separately in Chelmsford.

The proceedings were adjourned, with further hearings expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The provisional findings linking the deaths to cardiac and respiratory arrest, severe heat exposure and heat stress remain subject to the completion of the inquest process.

The deaths have prompted tributes from Chelsea and football organisations connected to Newton, while the circumstances have also drawn attention to the risks associated with hiking in extreme desert temperatures.

For readers, the key confirmed facts are that Newton and Martinson died on July 18 after undertaking a hike in Wadi Naqab, that they were found by search teams several kilometres from their vehicle, and that the provisional medical findings cited extreme heat-related factors.
