Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 31 kidnapped victims and neutralised two suspected terrorists, including a reported terrorist kingpin, during separate operations in Kebbi and Katsina states.
The operations were conducted on September 14 and 15, 2026, as troops intensified efforts to disrupt kidnapping and terrorist activities across parts of Nigeria’s North-West region.
According to the Joint Task Force, 10 victims were rescued in Katsina State after troops pursued terrorists who had abducted civilians from two communities, while another 21 victims were rescued in Kebbi State following a military response to a distress call.
Ten Kidnap Victims Rescued in Katsina
The first operation took place on September 14 in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, said troops of Sector 2 were deployed following reports that terrorists had abducted residents of Unguwan Daudu and Unguwan Chibauna communities.
The troops launched a pursuit of the attackers and engaged them in a gun battle.
According to the military account, the terrorists were forced to withdraw from the area, allowing troops to rescue 10 victims.
The rescued group consisted of three males and seven females, including an infant.
The victims were taken into military custody for further action following the operation.
The rescue highlights the role of rapid military response following intelligence or reports of abductions, particularly in communities vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
21 Victims Rescued in Kebbi
In a separate operation in Kebbi State on the same day, troops responded to a distress call concerning the abduction of civilians from Fafala Village in Kangiwa Local Government Area.
Danja said the troops acted on what the military described as credible intelligence and conducted a fighting patrol towards Fafala and Dandikwa.
The troops subsequently encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a heavy exchange of fire.
The military said the armed group withdrew from the area, after which troops searched the surrounding area and rescued 21 kidnapped victims.
The rescued victims were subsequently reunited with their families, according to the Joint Task Force.
The Kebbi operation brings the total number of victims rescued in the two operations to 31.
Suspected Terrorist Kingpin Killed in Katsina
The military also reported a separate operation in Katsina State on September 15.
According to Danja, troops received intelligence about an alleged plan by terrorists to attack communities in Matazu and Kankara local government areas.
The troops moved towards a suspected hideout and engaged the armed group.
The military said two suspected terrorists were killed during the encounter, while other members of the group escaped into surrounding bushes.
One of those killed was identified by the Joint Task Force as Abbah Alhassan, whom the military described as a known terrorist kingpin.
The military’s description of Alhassan as a terrorist kingpin is an official security claim and has been presented as such rather than as an independently established finding.
Items Recovered From Hideout
The operation also resulted in the recovery of several items, according to the military.
They included:
- 10 rounds of ammunition
- A motorcycle
- A cutlass
- Camouflage clothing
- Indian hemp
- Other unspecified items
The recovered materials were taken into military custody following the operation.
The military did not provide further details in the report about the ownership or intended use of each recovered item.
Two Suspects Arrested in Katsina
In another operation on September 15, troops arrested two suspected terrorists around the Yantumaki general area of Dan Musa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Joint Task Force said preliminary interrogation indicated that the suspects were associated with another alleged terrorist kingpin identified as Mannori.
The two suspects remained in military custody and were expected to undergo further investigation, according to the military.
At this stage, the allegations against the suspects have not been established by a court, and further investigation will determine the nature of their alleged involvement.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA’s Wider Security Role
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is one of the Nigerian military’s major operations against terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of armed criminality in the North-West.
Its area of operations covers states facing persistent security challenges, including Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Kaduna.
The latest operations form part of continuing military efforts to disrupt armed groups, rescue kidnapped civilians and prevent terrorist networks from maintaining freedom of movement.
Recent Defence Headquarters reporting has also highlighted sustained military operations across Nigeria, including rescue missions, arrests and attacks on terrorist and criminal networks. In a September 2026 operational update, the Defence Headquarters said troops had carried out thousands of operations nationwide during July and August, resulting in the rescue of hundreds of kidnapped victims and the arrest of suspected criminals.

The two suspects arrested in Katsina are expected to remain in military custody while investigators examine their alleged links to terrorist networks.
The rescued victims will also require appropriate support following their release from captivity, particularly those who may have experienced physical or psychological hardship while abducted.
For the military, Operation FANSAN YAMMA is expected to continue operations against terrorist and kidnapping networks across the North-West.
