Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted that Nigeria still has defensive issues to address as the team continues its campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The concerns have emerged at a crucial stage of the tournament, with the defending champions needing to tighten up at the back as the competition enters its decisive phase.

Madugu has consistently maintained that the Super Falcons remain a work in progress, even when results have gone Nigeria’s way. His assessment has focused on correcting lapses, improving positioning and ensuring that individual mistakes do not cost the team in important matches.

Nigeria’s defensive vulnerability has become one of the areas attracting attention as Madugu prepares his players for the challenge ahead.

The coach’s concerns are understandable given the standard expected from a team that enters every WAFCON edition among the leading contenders.

The Super Falcons are the most successful team in the history of the competition, and their status as defending champions means opponents are particularly motivated whenever they face Nigeria.

Madugu’s concerns over the defence are not entirely new.

During Nigeria’s preparations for the tournament, the coach repeatedly acknowledged that the team had areas requiring improvement.

Following the Super Falcons’ 2-1 victory over Senegal in a pre-WAFCON friendly in June, Madugu admitted that the team still had considerable work to do before the tournament.

He described the matches as opportunities to assess the squad, test tactical approaches and identify weaknesses that needed to be corrected.

The coach also acknowledged that Nigeria had suffered moments of poor positioning and individual errors during their preparations.

In the first friendly against Senegal, Nigeria conceded late after controlling large portions of the match. Madugu subsequently stressed the importance of learning from such situations rather than simply focusing on the final result.

The coaching staff also used the friendly matches to experiment with different formations and combinations, hoping to build a team capable of adapting to different opponents.

Cameroon represents one of the toughest challenges Nigeria could face in African women’s football.

The two nations have a long history of competitive encounters, and their meetings are often decided by fine margins.

Nigeria experienced that difficulty during their preparations for WAFCON 2026 when Cameroon defeated the Super Falcons 1-0 in the first game of a two-match friendly series in Yaoundé.

The result came after a defensive lapse allowed Cameroon to create an opportunity, while Nigeria also struggled to make its own chances count.

Cameroon eventually found the decisive goal in stoppage time through Yvana Mbomezomo.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s unbeaten run against Cameroon in their previous eight meetings and provided Madugu with an important warning ahead of the tournament.

However, the Super Falcons responded strongly in the return fixture.

Nigeria defeated Cameroon 3-1, with Chinwendu Ihezuo, Rinsola Babajide and Michelle Alozie finding the net as Madugu’s team showed greater attacking sharpness and resilience.

The two matches demonstrated why Cameroon cannot be taken lightly.

They also highlighted the importance of defensive concentration, particularly against an opponent capable of exploiting spaces when Nigeria loses possession.

Nigeria’s attacking philosophy often requires defenders to move forward and contribute to possession. However, this can create spaces behind them when possession is lost.

Against technically strong opponents, those spaces can quickly become dangerous.

The centre-backs must therefore maintain communication and ensure that the defensive line does not become exposed.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie also remains an important component of Nigeria’s defensive structure.

However, the coach will know that relying on the attack to compensate for defensive mistakes is a dangerous strategy.

At WAFCON level, opponents are capable of punishing defensive errors.

The Super Falcons therefore need balance.

The team must remain aggressive going forward while ensuring that enough players are positioned to stop counter-attacks.

This balance could prove decisive against Cameroon, particularly if the match develops into a physical and tactical contest.
