The Lagos State Government has empowered 3,792 residents with essential business tools under its Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), reaffirming its commitment to supporting small businesses, reducing unemployment, and promoting inclusive economic growth across the state.
The empowerment programme, coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), is designed to provide vulnerable residents with practical equipment that will enable them to establish or expand micro-enterprises, improve household incomes, and achieve financial independence.
Speaking during the presentation of the business tools, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the initiative reflects his administration’s determination to create opportunities for residents by investing in entrepreneurship rather than dependency.
According to the governor, small businesses remain the backbone of Lagos’ economy, contributing significantly to employment generation and economic resilience. He noted that equipping entrepreneurs with the right tools would help them become self-reliant, create jobs, and stimulate local economic activities.
“The goal is not simply to distribute equipment but to empower individuals with the means to earn sustainable incomes and improve their quality of life,” he said.
Beneficiaries Receive Practical Business Equipment
The beneficiaries received various vocational and business equipment tailored to their areas of specialization.
Items distributed included sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, catering tools, barbing kits, welding machines, shoemaking equipment, grinding machines, baking accessories, agricultural tools, and other essential items needed to operate small businesses.
Officials explained that beneficiaries had earlier undergone vocational training and entrepreneurship development programmes before qualifying for the business support initiative.
The government said the combination of skills acquisition and access to business equipment is expected to improve the success rate of new enterprises and reduce the number of unemployed youths and women across Lagos.
Focus on Poverty Reduction
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Cecilia Dada, described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at lifting families out of poverty through sustainable livelihoods.
She said the programme focuses on empowering residents who possess marketable skills but lack the financial capacity to purchase the equipment required to start businesses.
According to her, providing the right tools enables beneficiaries to immediately begin income-generating activities without the burden of seeking expensive loans.
Dada noted that thousands of residents have benefited from similar programmes over the years, with many now operating successful businesses that support their families and employ others.
She encouraged the new beneficiaries to make effective use of the equipment and avoid selling or misusing the items provided.
Strengthening Lagos’ Informal Economy
Experts have consistently described micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as the engine of Nigeria’s economy, accounting for a significant share of employment opportunities.
In Lagos, where thousands depend on informal businesses for survival, access to startup equipment often represents the biggest challenge for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Government officials believe initiatives such as MESI help bridge that gap by providing practical support that directly impacts productivity and income generation.
The programme also aligns with broader efforts by the state government to promote financial inclusion, entrepreneurship development, skills acquisition, and poverty alleviation.
Beneficiaries Urged to Grow Their Businesses
The state government advised beneficiaries to remain committed to their businesses, maintain the equipment properly, and continuously improve their skills.
Officials also encouraged them to embrace innovation, customer service, and financial discipline to ensure long-term business sustainability.
They expressed confidence that the programme would contribute to reducing unemployment while strengthening local communities through increased economic activities.
The government further pledged to continue implementing policies and programmes that support entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, and women-led businesses as part of its broader development agenda.
With nearly 3,800 additional entrepreneurs receiving the tools needed to begin or expand their businesses, Lagos says it is taking another practical step toward building a more inclusive economy where residents are empowered to create wealth and contribute meaningfully to the state’s continued growth.
