The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has praised Nigeria’s security agencies for the successful rescue of pupils, teachers, and other victims abducted in Oyo State, while expressing deep sorrow over the death of a Nigerian Army officer who was killed during the operation.
In a statement issued by the party, the SDP described the rescue mission as a significant achievement in the country’s fight against kidnapping and violent crime. The party said the operation demonstrated the courage, professionalism, and commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies despite the enormous risks involved.
The rescued victims had been held captive for weeks after gunmen attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, forcing pupils, teachers, and community members into the Old Oyo National Park. Their eventual rescue followed a coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
The party, however, noted that the success of the operation came at a painful cost, following the death of Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, a Nigerian Army officer who lost his life while participating in the rescue mission. Military authorities later confirmed that the officer died in active service during the operation and was buried with military honours.
According to the SDP, the fallen officer’s sacrifice reflects the unwavering commitment of members of the Armed Forces who continue to risk their lives daily to protect Nigerians from criminal groups.
The party extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer, the Nigerian Army, and the Federal Government, praying that they find strength to bear the loss. It also wished the rescued victims speedy recovery from the trauma of their ordeal.
The SDP urged the Federal Government to ensure that families of security personnel who die in the line of duty receive adequate compensation and long-term support. It also called for improved welfare, better intelligence gathering, and increased investment in modern security equipment to enhance ongoing operations against kidnappers and bandits.
The party stressed that while the successful rescue offers hope, it also highlights the continuing security challenges facing many parts of Nigeria. It warned that attacks on schools and the abduction of students remain serious threats requiring sustained government action.
The rescue operation followed weeks of intensive search efforts after the abduction triggered widespread concern across Oyo State. Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that a military officer was killed during efforts to secure the victims’ freedom, describing the loss as a painful reminder of the sacrifices being made by security personnel.
Security experts have repeatedly argued that stronger intelligence sharing, improved surveillance of forest reserves, and closer cooperation between federal and state authorities are necessary to prevent future attacks on schools and rural communities.
The SDP also appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information capable of preventing criminal activities, emphasizing that defeating insecurity requires cooperation between citizens and government institutions.
As the rescued pupils and teachers reunite with their families, the party said the nation should honour the memory of those who made the rescue possible, particularly the slain Army officer whose service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
The party reaffirmed its support for every lawful effort aimed at restoring peace, protecting educational institutions, and ensuring that children across Nigeria can pursue their education without fear of violence or abduction.
