The Special Adviser to the Governor of Plateau State on Inter-Party Relations, Sir John T. Akans, KSM, has called on residents of Plateau State to rally behind Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang ahead of the 2027 governorship election, arguing that continuity in governance is essential for sustaining peace, development, and institutional progress.

In a public opinion article titled “Standing with Plateau: Why We Must Keep the Table Whole,” Akans maintained that Governor Mutfwang’s administration has laid a strong foundation in peacebuilding, infrastructure, agriculture, and inclusive governance, urging citizens not to interrupt what he described as a rebuilding process.

According to the governor’s adviser, history demonstrates that nations achieve lasting progress when citizens prioritize continuity over political uncertainty. He cited Ghana, Rwanda, and Botswana as examples of African countries that benefited from consistent leadership and stable governance.

Akans referenced former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, arguing that Ghana’s economic transformation during his administration reflected the benefits of allowing policies to mature over time. He also pointed to Rwanda under President Paul Kagame, saying the country’s post-conflict recovery illustrates the importance of national unity behind a shared development agenda.

Similarly, he highlighted Botswana as an example of a country whose long-standing commitment to policy continuity has contributed to strong democratic institutions and economic stability.

Drawing parallels with Plateau State, Akans argued that the current administration deserves the opportunity to complete ongoing projects rather than face political disruption.

Call for Continuity

The adviser asserted that Governor Mutfwang’s government has demonstrated a commitment to improving governance by focusing on security, infrastructure development, agricultural expansion, and policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.

He said the administration has earned public confidence through what he described as responsive leadership that listens to the concerns of residents.

According to him, replacing a government while major reforms are underway could delay development and reverse gains already achieved.

Akans maintained that citizens should evaluate governments based on measurable performance rather than political rhetoric.

Opposition and Second-Term Debate

Addressing emerging conversations surrounding the 2027 governorship election, Akans argued that political opposition is a normal feature of democracy but should not distract from ongoing governance.

He contended that those advocating an early change in leadership have yet to present a convincing alternative vision capable of advancing Plateau’s development.

According to the adviser, previous experiences in parts of Nigeria have shown that abrupt political changes can sometimes lead to abandoned projects and policy discontinuity.

He therefore appealed to Plateau residents to remain focused on sustaining ongoing reforms.

Position on Zoning

Akans also commented on renewed discussions surrounding zoning in Plateau politics.

While acknowledging zoning as a principle designed to promote fairness and inclusion, he argued that reopening such debates at this stage could distract attention from governance priorities.

He suggested that many residents are more concerned about access to quality roads, potable water, improved security, employment opportunities, and economic development than political realignments.

His comments add to ongoing political conversations in Plateau State as stakeholders begin positioning ahead of the next election cycle.
