The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” in connection with the alleged rape and subsequent death of a 20-year-old woman, in a case that has generated widespread public outrage and intensified calls for justice for victims of sexual violence in Nigeria.
The suspect, who is well-known on social media for his content creation activities, was apprehended following a petition submitted to the Delta State Police Command by the deceased’s family. The petition alleged that Ogbonna lured the young woman to Asaba under the pretext of mentoring her in content creation before allegedly sexually assaulting her.
According to police authorities, the 20-year-old woman travelled to Delta State after being promised an opportunity to receive training in digital content creation. Investigators alleged that shortly after arriving in Asaba, she was taken to a hotel where she was allegedly raped and physically assaulted by the suspect.
Police sources said the victim later returned home in a distressed condition and narrated her ordeal to her family members. She also reportedly recorded a video before her death in which she detailed the alleged assault and the emotional trauma she experienced following the incident.
The Delta State Police Command disclosed that the young woman allegedly consumed a poisonous substance days after the incident. She was rushed to a medical facility where doctors battled to save her life but was later confirmed dead.
The tragic development prompted her family to petition the police, leading to the commencement of a full-scale investigation.
Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi reportedly directed detectives to treat the matter with urgency, resulting in the arrest of the suspect.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, said investigators acted swiftly after receiving the petition and gathering preliminary evidence linking the suspect to the allegations.
According to the police, Ogbonna has been questioned by detectives, while further investigations continue to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged rape and the victim’s death.
Authorities said detectives are reviewing witness statements, digital evidence, including the deceased’s recorded video, and other materials considered relevant to the investigation.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and urged members of the public to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information capable of interfering with the legal process.
The command assured residents that all available evidence would be professionally examined before appropriate legal action is taken.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria, particularly on social media, where many users have demanded justice for the deceased and called for stricter measures against sexual violence.
Women’s rights advocates have also renewed calls for stronger legal protection for victims of sexual abuse, improved support systems, and quicker prosecution of offenders.
The case has further highlighted concerns about the vulnerability of young people seeking career opportunities through social media, with experts urging aspiring content creators to exercise caution when accepting invitations from individuals they have not thoroughly verified.

The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent investigation and ensuring that anyone found culpable faces justice in accordance with Nigerian law.

Under Nigerian law, the suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
