OPay has advanced 10 student teams to the next stage of its ₦18 million National Innovation Challenge, narrowing a nationwide field of young Nigerian innovators competing to develop technology-driven solutions to real-world challenges.

The innovation programme is being delivered by OPay in partnership with Google and the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, placing Nigerian undergraduate innovators at the centre of a competition focused on technology, digital skills and practical problem-solving.

The selection of the top 10 teams marks another major stage in a competition that began with thousands of applications from students across Nigeria.

From Thousands of Applicants to 10 Teams

The National Innovation Challenge forms part of the expanded OPay Scholars Programme, which combines education support with innovation, skills development, mentorship and career opportunities.

Applications for the challenge opened on May 25 and were extended until July 3, 2026. OPay said more than 2,200 teams applied, representing more than 11,000 undergraduate students from tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Following the initial evaluation, 48 teams were selected for the next phase. The group consisted of 24 teams from OPay partner institutions and another 24 from non-partner tertiary institutions.

The shortlisted teams subsequently entered a six-week virtual learning and mentorship programme involving OPay, Google and 3MTT.

The programme was designed to help participants strengthen their technical knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking and ability to develop solutions addressing practical challenges.

The next selection stage reduced the field to 10 teams.

A Competition Built Around Practical Innovation

Unlike a conventional academic competition, the National Innovation Challenge is structured around the development of technology solutions.

Participants were expected to work on ideas capable of addressing problems in areas including fintech and digital payments, health technology, education technology, agriculture, cybersecurity, climate and sustainability, artificial intelligence and digital tools for small businesses.

The structure reflects the growing emphasis on using technology to address challenges that affect communities and businesses across Nigeria.

For the participating students, the competition also provides exposure to professionals working within Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

Through the partnership with Google and 3MTT, participants have received training and learning opportunities designed to strengthen their digital capabilities.

Google and 3MTT Bring Additional Training

The involvement of Google and 3MTT adds a skills-development component to the competition.

3MTT is a Federal Government initiative under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy focused on developing Nigeria’s technical talent base.

Under the OPay partnership, 3MTT and Google have supported training during the webinar and bootcamp phases of the challenge.

This means the programme is not limited to identifying winning teams. Participants are also being exposed to technical training, mentorship and practical approaches to developing technology products.

The approach is particularly relevant as Nigerian universities and technology communities continue to produce young developers, entrepreneurs and innovators seeking opportunities to turn ideas into practical products.

What the Top 10 Teams Face Next

The 10 teams moving forward are expected to participate in an intensive innovation bootcamp designed to further develop their solutions.

The programme’s published structure provides for a six-week innovation bootcamp led by OPay digital experts. The teams are expected to refine their concepts and strengthen their prototypes ahead of the final stages of the competition.

The competition will eventually narrow the field again, with four teams expected to reach the grand-final pitching stage.

The grand finale is scheduled for November 6, 2026, during the Empowering Futures Conference 2.0, where the finalists are expected to present their refined solutions before technology and investment stakeholders.

The ₦18 Million Prize Pool

The National Innovation Challenge carries a total prize pool of ₦18 million.

The first-place team is set to receive a ₦10 million project grant alongside a ₦300,000 scholarship award, mentorship, prototype advisory support, a certificate and a job opportunity.

The second-place team is scheduled to receive a ₦5 million project grant and a ₦300,000 scholarship, together with other programme benefits.

The third-place team is expected to receive a ₦3 million project grant and a ₦300,000 scholarship.

Beyond the financial awards, the programme provides participants with access to mentorship, professional networks and potential career pathways.

More Than a Competition

The innovation challenge is part of OPay’s wider Scholars Programme, which the company expanded in 2026.

The programme builds on OPay’s ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship commitment and now incorporates three major areas: the scholarship initiative, the National Innovation Challenge and OPay Futures.

According to reporting on the programme, more than 1,200 students are already direct beneficiaries of the scholarship component.

OPay has also positioned OPay Futures as a pathway connecting high-performing participants with mentorship, internships and employment opportunities.

For students participating in the innovation challenge, this creates a potential bridge between university education and practical experience in the technology and business sectors.

Why the Challenge Matters

The progression from more than 2,200 team applications to 48 shortlisted teams and then 10 finalists illustrates the level of competition among Nigerian students seeking opportunities to develop technology-based solutions.

It also highlights the growing role of private-sector programmes in supporting digital skills development alongside government and technology-sector initiatives.

For Nigeria, where policymakers and businesses continue to focus on digital skills, entrepreneurship and youth employment, programmes that combine training with practical product development can provide students with experience beyond the traditional classroom.

The partnership involving OPay, Google and 3MTT also demonstrates how private companies, global technology organisations and government programmes can collaborate around skills development.

However, the ultimate value of the challenge will depend not only on the prize money or competition results, but also on whether participating teams are able to continue developing their ideas into sustainable products after the programme.

From Student Ideas to Potential Solutions

The central question for the remaining teams is now how effectively they can transform their ideas into viable solutions.

Moving from a concept to a functioning product requires more than a compelling pitch. Teams must understand the problem they are attempting to solve, identify the people who need the solution, develop technology that works and determine whether the product can operate sustainably.

The bootcamp phase therefore represents an important transition from competition preparation to deeper product development.

The teams will also have an opportunity to learn from industry professionals and refine their ideas before the final presentations.

What Happens Next

The top 10 teams are expected to continue through the innovation bootcamp, after which the competition will progress towards the final selection.

Four teams are scheduled to reach the grand-final pitching stage at the Empowering Futures Conference 2.0 on November 6, 2026.

The eventual winner will receive the ₦10 million project grant and other benefits attached to the National Innovator of the Year award.

For the students involved, however, the programme’s significance extends beyond the final ranking. Training, mentorship, industry exposure and potential career opportunities form a substantial part of the initiative.

The National Innovation Challenge therefore represents both a competition for ₦18 million in prizes and a broader experiment in connecting Nigerian undergraduate talent with the country’s growing technology ecosystem.

As the 10 remaining teams enter the next phase, attention will shift from selection to execution — and to whether the ideas developed by the students can evolve into solutions capable of creating lasting value.
