Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has withdrawn from England’s squad ahead of the opening matches of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League after suffering a muscle injury.
Palmer had been recalled by England manager Thomas Tuchel on September 18 after being left out of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His withdrawal comes just days before England begin their new Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley.
Sky Sports reported on Monday that Palmer will leave the England squad because of a muscle problem. Chelsea also confirmed that the 24-year-old has withdrawn from international duty and will instead focus on his fitness at the club.
Palmer’s England Return Cut Short
Palmer was among the notable players recalled by Tuchel for England’s September-October international window.
The Chelsea forward was included in a 27-man squad for four Nations League fixtures between September 21 and October 6. England are scheduled to face Spain at Wembley on September 26 before travelling to Czechia three days later. They will then play Croatia in Rijeka on October 3 before hosting Czechia at Wembley on October 6.
His recall marked a return to the senior England setup after he was omitted from the squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel had explained that Palmer’s selection was influenced by his improved form and fitness. The England manager said Palmer had been starting regularly for Chelsea and had returned to producing important numbers in his game.
The withdrawal therefore means Palmer will have to wait longer for his next opportunity to play for England under Tuchel.
Chelsea Confirm Palmer Will Focus On Fitness
Chelsea confirmed that Palmer has withdrawn from England duty and will remain with the club during the international break.
The club said Palmer and defender Wesley Fofana had withdrawn from international duty and would instead focus on their fitness at Cobham.
Sky Sports described Palmer’s latest problem as a muscle injury, while other reports have also linked his withdrawal to the management of his workload following an injury-disrupted previous campaign.
The precise severity of the latest muscle problem has not been publicly detailed by Chelsea in its announcement.
That distinction is important because Palmer has experienced fitness problems in recent seasons, making his condition an issue Chelsea are likely to manage carefully.
Palmer Had Started Season Strongly
Palmer’s England recall followed an encouraging start to the new club season.
Sky Sports reported that he had scored four goals in seven matches for Chelsea before the latest international break. His return to regular football had helped put him back into contention for England after missing the World Cup.
Tuchel had also highlighted Palmer’s return to regular involvement when explaining his selection.
“Cole starts every game for Chelsea – he’s a regular starter, he decides matches, he has his numbers back in his game,” Tuchel said, according to England Football.
The withdrawal now interrupts what had been a significant period in Palmer’s attempt to re-establish himself internationally.
England Face Spain Without Palmer
England’s first Nations League fixture will be against Spain at Wembley on September 26.
Spain enter the campaign as the reigning world champions following their victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while England finished third after beating France in the third-place play-off.
England will subsequently face Czechia twice and Croatia once during the extended international window.
Palmer’s absence removes one of the attacking options Tuchel had selected for the campaign, although England’s squad still includes players such as Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers and Marcus Rashford.
A Significant Fitness Management Issue
Palmer’s withdrawal also highlights the continuing challenge of managing player workloads during an increasingly crowded football calendar.
For Chelsea, protecting Palmer’s fitness is particularly relevant given his history of injury interruptions. The club has previously taken a cautious approach to his rehabilitation, while Palmer’s latest withdrawal allows him to continue working with Chelsea’s medical and fitness staff during the international period.
There is no indication from the available official statements that Palmer’s withdrawal is related to disciplinary reasons or a dispute with the England setup. The confirmed information is that he has withdrawn because of a fitness issue and will return to Chelsea’s care.
What Happens Next?
Palmer will remain with Chelsea during the international break as he works on his fitness.
England, meanwhile, will begin preparations for their Nations League opener against Spain at Wembley on September 26. The squad will then travel to Prague for the meeting with Czechia on September 29 before facing Croatia in Rijeka on October 3 and returning to Wembley for another match against Czechia on October 6.
The extent of Palmer’s injury and his expected return date have not been officially announced. His recovery will therefore be monitored by Chelsea ahead of the club’s return to domestic competition.
For Palmer, the immediate priority is fitness, while England will have to continue their Nations League campaign without a player Tuchel had only recently brought back into the squad.
