The Jigawa State Government has approved the release of ₦586 million for the renovation and upgrading of the Maigatari Border Free Trade Zone, a strategic economic hub expected to strengthen cross-border commerce, attract local and foreign investment, and create thousands of employment opportunities across the state.
The approval forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to transform Jigawa into one of Nigeria’s leading commercial gateways by leveraging its strategic location along the country’s northern border with the Republic of Niger.
The Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmed, disclosed the development after the State Executive Council meeting held in Dutse, stating that the project reflects Governor Umar Namadi’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities through infrastructure development and private sector partnerships.
According to him, the Maigatari Border Free Zone remains one of the state’s most valuable economic assets and requires modern facilities capable of supporting increasing trade activities between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.
Strategic investment in regional trade
The Maigatari Border Free Trade Zone occupies a strategic position along one of Nigeria’s busiest trade corridors connecting the country with Niger Republic and other markets within the West African sub-region.
For decades, traders from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon have used the Maigatari axis for the movement of agricultural produce, livestock, manufactured goods and consumer products.
