The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined appropriation of N404.07 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), endorsing the Fund’s proposed budgets for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years in a move aimed at strengthening policing, enhancing security operations, and improving critical law enforcement infrastructure across the country.
The approval, granted during Thursday’s plenary, covers N170.10 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and N233.96 billion for the 2026 fiscal year. The decision underscores the National Assembly’s continued commitment to supporting efforts to improve the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force amid evolving security challenges nationwide.
The budget approvals followed the presentation of the report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. The report was presented by the committee’s Acting Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central Senatorial District, on behalf of the committee’s substantive chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed Mallam-Madori of Jigawa East.
While presenting the committee’s findings, Senator Akintunde explained that the 2025 budget proposal required reconsideration because implementation of the previously approved appropriation had been delayed due to legal and administrative developments surrounding proposed amendments to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2019.
According to the committee, the budget under consideration had initially received legislative approval for implementation during the 2024 fiscal period. However, implementation could not commence following issues arising from the proposed amendment to the enabling Act, alongside other circumstances beyond the control of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
The Senate’s latest approval is expected to provide the legal and financial backing required for the Fund to proceed with programmes designed to improve policing standards, strengthen operational readiness, and support infrastructure development for the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide sustainable financing for the training, welfare, equipment, and operational needs of the Nigeria Police Force. Since its establishment, the Fund has played a significant role in supporting police reforms through the procurement of operational equipment, rehabilitation of police facilities, and capacity-building initiatives.
Security remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing national priorities. Successive administrations have continued to invest in strengthening the country’s security architecture to address challenges including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, communal conflicts, and other forms of criminal activity.
