The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Chief Eric Chinemeucheya Opah, has unveiled Dr Godswill Agu Egbe as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

The pairing puts Egbe on the APC ticket as deputy governorship candidate as the party prepares for the February 6, 2027 governorship election in Abia State.

Egbe has already appeared alongside Opah during consultations with APC stakeholders across the state, indicating that the partnership has been part of the party’s preparations for the election.

Opah-Egbe Ticket Takes Shape Ahead of 2027 Poll

Opah emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate after the party’s primary election in May 2026. The party subsequently maintained that he remained its recognised candidate after questions were raised by supporters of former minister Henry Ikoh over the outcome of the primary.

The APC’s Abia leadership said the primary, held on May 21, followed due process and produced Opah as the party’s candidate.

By July, reports showed Opah and Egbe conducting consultations with party stakeholders in different parts of the state.

During a July consultation in Umunneochi Local Government Area, former Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha referred to Opah and Egbe as the party’s recognised governorship and deputy governorship candidates. She also said the engagement was a consultation with stakeholders rather than a campaign rally.

The development underscored the growing visibility of the APC ticket ahead of the election.

Who Is Godswill Agu Egbe?

Egbe has been described in reports as a technocrat and development professional with experience spanning development finance, pension administration, agribusiness, project management, institutional strengthening and strategic advisory services.

In September, Opah publicly celebrated Egbe and highlighted what he described as his running mate’s more than 27 years of professional experience. The APC candidate also pointed to Egbe’s previous engagements with organisations including BUA International, USAID/Connexus Corporation and the African Development Bank Group.

Egbe’s academic and professional background has also featured prominently in reports about the APC deputy governorship candidate. The Independent Newspaper reported that he holds qualifications in financial mathematics, economics and statistics.

The choice of Egbe also carries a local political dimension. He is from the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, an area that has featured in the APC’s consultations ahead of the 2027 election. Reports have linked his selection to efforts to broaden the ticket’s geographic and political appeal, although such political calculations remain matters for voters and analysts to assess.

Opah Highlights Economic and Development Agenda

Opah has previously presented his 2027 ambition around industrialisation, job creation and economic development.

When he formally declared his governorship ambition in May, he said his aspiration was focused on an agenda rather than personal ambition. Premium Times reported that he identified industrialisation and employment creation among the priorities of his proposed administration.

More recently, Opah has described the partnership with Egbe as part of a broader plan for Abia.

In a September message celebrating Egbe’s birthday, Opah said their proposed administration would focus on sustainable development, economic empowerment and strengthening businesses, while also addressing the interests of farmers, workers and pensioners.

Those commitments will face scrutiny as the election approaches, particularly because voters will ultimately judge the candidates on the credibility of their programmes, records, policy proposals and ability to address the state’s economic and social challenges.

APC’s Abia Election Challenge

The APC enters the 2027 contest seeking to unseat incumbent Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party, who is seeking a second term.

The Abia governorship race is expected to involve several political parties. Vanguard reported in September that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had displayed the names of governorship and deputy governorship candidates ahead of the February 6, 2027 poll.

Otti is seeking re-election with Ikechukwu Emetu as his running mate, while other parties have also fielded candidates for the contest.

For Opah and the APC, the challenge will therefore extend beyond securing the party’s ticket. The party will need to build a strong statewide campaign structure, maintain internal cohesion and persuade voters that its platform offers a credible alternative to the incumbent administration.

The APC has already faced internal disagreements over Opah’s emergence. However, the party’s state leadership has continued to recognise him as its candidate.

Stakeholder Consultations Continue

Opah and Egbe have continued to engage APC stakeholders as the party prepares for the election.

During an August consultation with Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, the Abia State Director of the CityBoy Movement, Egbe accompanied Opah as part of the governorship candidate’s delegation. The meeting was presented as an effort to strengthen engagement with party stakeholders and consolidate the party’s structure ahead of the election.

Such consultations are expected to remain important as political parties move deeper into the 2027 electoral cycle.

For the APC, maintaining unity among party members and translating its organisational structure into support across Abia’s local government areas will be central to its prospects.

Why the Opah-Egbe Ticket Matters

The unveiling of Egbe completes an important part of the APC’s governorship ticket and gives voters a clearer picture of the team seeking to challenge the incumbent in 2027.

Egbe’s professional background also gives the ticket an opportunity to emphasise economic management, institutional development and private-sector engagement. However, professional credentials alone will not determine the outcome of the election.

The APC will still have to convince Abia voters that its candidates understand the state’s priorities and can translate their promises into measurable results.

The political contest will also be shaped by the performance and campaign strategies of other candidates, including the incumbent governor and candidates from the PDP and other parties.

What Happens Next?

With the Opah-Egbe ticket established, attention will increasingly turn to campaign activities, policy programmes, grassroots mobilisation and efforts by the competing parties to win support across Abia State.

The February 6, 2027 governorship election will ultimately give voters the opportunity to decide which candidate and political platform should lead the state for the next term.

For the APC, the immediate task will be to consolidate its ticket, maintain party unity and present a detailed policy alternative to Abia voters as the election approaches.
