Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has renewed his demand for a fair trial, drawing attention to his continued detention as the period in custody reportedly reaches 256 days amid corruption-related allegations and other legal issues.

The development has renewed attention on the legal proceedings involving the former governor, particularly questions surrounding due process, the right to a fair hearing and the responsibility of law enforcement authorities to ensure that investigations and prosecutions follow established legal procedures.

El-Rufai’s position places renewed focus on the importance of judicial independence and the constitutional protections available to individuals facing criminal allegations.

El-Rufai’s detention and the legal proceedings

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 18, 2026, according to reports of the ongoing investigation.

The former governor’s detention followed investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his administration of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023.

The allegations include suspected abuse of office, money laundering and irregularities involving public funds. El-Rufai has denied wrongdoing, and the allegations remain matters for judicial determination.

His continued detention has also been challenged through legal applications, including attempts to secure bail and proceedings concerning the conduct of the investigation.

In October, the Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna dismissed his appeal against the refusal of bail. The three-member panel held that he had not established sufficient fresh circumstances to justify overturning the lower court’s decision. Channels Television +1

The ₦8.68 billion CCTV contract case

One of the major cases involving the former governor concerns an alleged ₦8.68 billion CCTV surveillance contract awarded during his administration.

The ICPC arraigned El-Rufai, his former senior special adviser Jimi Adebisi Lawal and five corporate entities on an amended 11-count charge involving alleged corruption, money laundering and related offences.

According to the anti-corruption commission, the allegations concern the procurement and installation of a CCTV surveillance system in Kaduna metropolis.

The commission alleged that the contract was awarded in violation of applicable procurement requirements and involved a company it claimed lacked the necessary experience and qualifications.

El-Rufai and the other defendants pleaded not guilty. The allegations have not been established by a court.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna subsequently adjourned the substantive hearing until December 8, 2026, following changes in the legal teams representing the prosecution and the former governor. ICPC +1

Separate case involving alleged telephone interception

El-Rufai is also facing a separate criminal case brought by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of unlawful interception of telephone communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The case followed comments made by the former governor during a television interview in February 2026, in which he discussed access to conversations involving the national security adviser.

The DSS brought an amended five-count charge against him. El-Rufai pleaded not guilty.

In September, the Federal High Court in Abuja heard arguments on a no-case submission filed by his defence team. The defence asked the court to discharge him, arguing that the prosecution had failed to establish sufficient evidence to require him to present a defence.

The prosecution opposed the application and urged the court to allow the case to proceed. Channels Television +1

Why the fair trial demand matters

The developments surrounding El-Rufai’s detention raise important questions about the administration of justice, particularly the relationship between anti-corruption investigations and the constitutional rights of individuals facing criminal proceedings.

Under Section 36 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, every person charged with a criminal offence is entitled to a fair hearing within a reasonable time by a court established by law.

The constitutional framework also protects the presumption of innocence, meaning that a person facing criminal charges must not be treated as guilty before a competent court establishes the allegations.

These protections apply regardless of an individual’s political position, public reputation or the seriousness of the allegations.

At the same time, anti-corruption agencies have a responsibility to investigate credible allegations of financial misconduct and pursue prosecutions supported by evidence.

The challenge is ensuring that accountability and the protection of individual rights operate together under the law.

What happens next?

The next significant development in the CCTV contract case is the scheduled December 8, 2026 hearing at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

The separate DSS proceedings and El-Rufai’s other legal challenges will also remain important to the wider picture surrounding his detention and prosecution.

For now, the central issues remain the determination of the allegations before the courts, the outcome of the pending legal proceedings and the protection of the former governor’s constitutional rights.
