Suspect recounts alleged killing of girlfriend after HIV dispute

A 30-year-old man arrested by the Enugu State Police Command over the alleged killing of his girlfriend has given an account of the incident, saying the confrontation followed an argument over HIV infection.

The suspect, identified in police-related reports as Okpara Emmanuel, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Chinyere, at his residence in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu on September 19, 2026.

According to the Enugu State Police Command, preliminary investigations indicated that the woman’s remains were wrapped and concealed inside the toilet of the suspect’s apartment.

Police said neighbours later became suspicious after noticing an offensive odour coming from the apartment. They reportedly forced the door open and discovered the decomposing remains before the suspect was apprehended.

The suspect was subsequently rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Division, according to police.

In a later account shared by the police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect said an argument over allegations surrounding HIV transmission preceded the physical confrontation.

The account remains the suspect’s version of events and forms part of an ongoing police investigation.

Earlier reports by Premium Times and Punch said police had ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and directed that the suspect be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded.

The police said the deceased’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts were being made to trace and notify her relatives.

The case highlights the importance of allowing investigators and the courts to establish the circumstances surrounding a suspected killing rather than treating a suspect’s account as a final determination of what happened.

D’Banj donates three vehicles to Osun politician’s 2027 campaign

Afrobeats singer Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, has donated three brand-new Sienna space buses to lawyer and politician Pelumi Olajengbesi to support his campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 election.

Olajengbesi is seeking to represent the Oriade-Obokun Federal Constituency of Osun State.

The vehicles were presented to him in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Thursday, October 1, according to reports published on Friday.

Olajengbesi disclosed the donation in a social media post, explaining that D’Banj had contacted him about two weeks earlier to obtain the details of the person responsible for his campaign branding.

According to Olajengbesi, he initially understood that the branding contact was needed for D’Banj’s CREAM project, which focuses on young creatives.

He said he was therefore surprised when three fully branded Sienna buses were delivered to him in Osogbo.

Olajengbesi quoted D’Banj as describing the donation as “my token of support”.

The lawyer thanked the musician for what he described as significant support for his political ambition.

The donation comes as Olajengbesi builds support for his 2027 House of Representatives bid. Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has also publicly endorsed his ambition, according to reports.

Olajengbesi previously served as a spokesperson during Governor Ademola Adeleke’s 2026 re-election campaign in Osun State and is the convener of the Imole Grassroots Mobilisation Network.

He previously contested the Oriade-Obokun Federal Constituency seat in 2019.

The development also illustrates the increasing involvement of prominent entertainment figures in political campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

However, the donation itself does not determine the outcome of the election, which will ultimately depend on the electoral process and voters.

What to know from the two developments

The Enugu case remains a police investigation, with the suspect’s account requiring further investigation and possible judicial scrutiny. Authorities have not indicated that the allegations surrounding the HIV dispute constitute an established explanation for the killing.

In Osun, D’Banj’s donation provides material support to Olajengbesi’s campaign for the 2027 House of Representatives election. The development follows other public endorsements of the candidate and comes as political activity begins to intensify ahead of the next general election.

Both developments were among the stories drawing attention in Nigeria as the day’s major news unfolded.

What happens next

Police investigations into the Enugu killing are expected to continue, including efforts to establish the circumstances of the woman’s death and complete the process required for prosecution.

In Osun, Olajengbesi is expected to continue his political activities ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election. The donated vehicles are intended to support his campaign activities.

Weng Global will continue to follow confirmed developments and report official updates as they emerge.
