Political activity is intensifying in Kwara State as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have unveiled new state secretariats in Ilorin, signalling increased organisational preparations ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The NDC handed over its new secretariat at 187 Lagos Road, Ilorin, to the state executive committee led by AbdulGaniyu AbdulSalam on Monday, September 28, while the SDP unveiled its secretariat along Fate-Basin Road on Wednesday, September 30. The developments come as political parties in the state expand their structures and grassroots activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
NDC Uses Secretariat Opening to Address Internal Disagreement
The NDC’s secretariat handover was led by its Kwara governorship candidate, Prof. Abdulmumin Olayinka Ajia, who said the development was intended to strengthen the party’s organisation and help resolve disagreements over its state leadership.
Ajia handed the facility to the AbdulSalam-led executive committee with the backing of the party’s deputy governorship candidate and other candidates contesting senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats in the state.
The governorship candidate called on members who had taken different positions during the internal disagreement to work with the recognised state executive through the party’s appropriate structures.
Ajia said the party needed to move beyond its internal disputes and concentrate on building an organisation capable of competing in the 2027 election.
His remarks were also consistent with the broader objective of using the new secretariat as a centre for reconciliation, coordination and grassroots mobilisation.
NDC Outlines Its Policy Priorities
Ajia said the NDC’s proposed “Forward Kwara Agenda”, also referred to as “Itesiwaju Kwara”, would focus on areas including security, education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic opportunities.
He described the party’s proposed priorities as part of a broader development programme intended to address the needs of communities across the state.
The NDC candidate had previously launched his 2027 campaign agenda in Ilorin, identifying security, education, healthcare, job creation and infrastructure among the areas his campaign intends to prioritise.
The party’s latest organisational move therefore comes against the backdrop of its wider campaign preparations.
SDP Opens New Secretariat in Ilorin
The SDP also strengthened its presence in Kwara with the unveiling of its new secretariat along Fate-Basin Road in Ilorin.
The ceremony was attended by the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, vice-presidential candidate Usman Muhammed Bugaje and other national and state party leaders.
The event brought together party officials, candidates and supporters as the SDP continues its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the ceremony, the party’s Kwara deputy governorship candidate, Funsho Kolawole Thawphic, described the opening of the secretariat as a new beginning for the party’s activities in the state.
Thawphic said the party wanted to present itself to voters in Kwara as an alternative political platform and urged residents to consider its candidates and programme ahead of the election.
He also called attention to the SDP’s governorship candidate, Dr Apaokagi, whom he described as a humanitarian.
SDP Links Mobilisation to Its Political Programme
The opening of the SDP secretariat comes as the party increases its organisational activities in Kwara.
The party’s state chairman, Sharafdeen Ibrahim, separately said at the secretariat commissioning that the SDP’s manifesto was focused on productivity, security and governance. He also announced a proposal to reduce petrol prices to ₦200 per litre if the party is elected, a position attributable to the party rather than an established outcome.
Such proposals are part of the political messages parties are taking to voters as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
For readers, the distinction between campaign promises and confirmed government policy is important: proposals made during an election campaign represent what a party or candidate says it intends to pursue if elected.
What the Parallel Openings Mean for Kwara Politics
The establishment of new or strengthened party secretariats is significant because political parties rely on state and local structures to coordinate candidates, communicate with members and organise grassroots activities.
For the NDC, the Ilorin development also has an internal organisational dimension because its leadership has been working to resolve disagreements within the Kwara chapter. For the SDP, the opening provides a physical base for its expanding campaign and mobilisation activities in the state.
The two developments demonstrate that political parties are already positioning their structures well ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
However, the opening of party offices alone does not establish electoral support or determine the eventual outcome of an election. Their significance will depend on how effectively the parties organise, communicate their programmes, select and coordinate candidates, and engage voters as the electoral process progresses.
The Wider 2027 Context
Kwara State is expected to remain an important political arena as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
The NDC and SDP are among the political organisations seeking to expand their presence beyond established political structures, while their candidates are increasingly presenting policy programmes and campaign messages to voters.
The activities also illustrate how the period preceding an election involves more than rallies and public declarations. Party offices, executive committees, ward structures, candidates and grassroots networks form part of the organisational infrastructure through which political campaigns operate.
As the 2027 election approaches, voters will have opportunities to assess the programmes, candidates and records presented by the various political parties.
What Happens Next?
The immediate focus for the NDC and SDP will be on consolidating their structures across Kwara State, coordinating their candidates and expanding grassroots engagement.
The NDC is expected to use its new secretariat for party administration, reconciliation and mobilisation under the AbdulSalam-led executive, while the SDP will continue using its Ilorin secretariat as part of its organisational preparations.
Further campaign activities, policy presentations and candidate engagements are expected as political parties continue their preparations for the 2027 elections.
The developments mark another stage in Kwara’s evolving political landscape, but the eventual significance of the new structures will be determined by subsequent party activities and the broader electoral process.
