Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has commended the Nigerian Army for its intervention in the state’s education sector following the remodelling of Ezomo Primary and Secondary Schools, describing the project as an important contribution to improving the learning environment for pupils and students.
The governor’s commendation highlights the potential role of partnerships between government institutions and the military in supporting public infrastructure, particularly in education.
The intervention is also significant against the background of Edo State’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate public schools and improve access to better learning facilities.
Nigerian Army’s Intervention in Edo Education Sector
The remodelling of Ezomo Primary and Secondary Schools represents an intervention aimed at improving the physical conditions in which children receive education. The governor’s remarks recognise the importance of institutional cooperation in addressing infrastructure challenges facing public schools.
Okpebholo’s administration has repeatedly identified education infrastructure as a priority since assuming office in November 2024.
In March 2025, the governor declared a state of emergency in public schools across Edo State after inspecting facilities and expressing concern about their condition. His administration subsequently embarked on school renovation and reconstruction programmes. Metro Punch +1
Edo State’s Wider School Rehabilitation Efforts
The Army’s intervention comes amid wider efforts to improve public education infrastructure across the state.
In November 2025, former Edo Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, disclosed that the state had renovated or rebuilt 68 schools and recovered 25 schools previously affected by land grabbing.
He also reported that more than 1,000 students had moved from private to public schools, which he attributed partly to improvements in public school infrastructure and the state’s free education policy.
These figures were provided by the state government and have not been independently audited in the reporting cited here.
Why the Army’s Intervention Matters
The involvement of the Nigerian Army in school infrastructure development highlights the potential contribution of public institutions to social development beyond their conventional security responsibilities.
For pupils and students, improved school facilities can provide a safer and more conducive environment for learning. Proper classrooms and essential infrastructure can also help teachers deliver lessons more effectively.
However, infrastructure development must be supported by other important investments, including qualified teachers, adequate learning materials, school maintenance and effective administration.
The quality of education cannot be measured by renovated buildings alone. Sustainable improvements require attention to both the physical learning environment and the quality of teaching.
The Importance of Government and Institutional Partnerships
The commendation also draws attention to the value of cooperation between state governments and federal institutions.
Nigeria continues to face challenges in providing adequate educational infrastructure, particularly in communities where public schools have experienced years of neglect.
Partnerships involving government agencies, security institutions, development organisations and local communities can contribute to addressing some of these challenges.
For Edo State, maintaining the facilities at Ezomo Primary and Secondary Schools will be important in ensuring that the intervention produces lasting benefits for learners.
What Happens Next?
Further details about the Nigerian Army’s remodelling project, including its cost, construction timeline, specific facilities provided and the Army unit responsible, would help establish the full scope of the intervention.
The long-term impact will depend on how effectively the facilities are maintained and whether pupils and teachers experience measurable improvements in their learning conditions.
Weng Global will continue to follow developments in Edo State’s education sector.
