MultiChoice has discontinued its GOtv Stream mobile application, ending a service that allowed subscribers to watch selected television channels, movies, sports and catch-up programmes on smartphones and tablets.
The discontinuation took effect after October 31, 2026, according to a notification displayed to subscribers, bringing an end to the complimentary streaming service that had extended GOtv viewing beyond traditional television screens.
However, the company has indicated that the decision does not affect customers’ existing GOtv subscriptions, television packages or decoder services.
An announcement reproduced by South African entertainment publication Insidus ZA stated that GOtv Stream would end on October 31, adding that subscribers would not need to take any action regarding their existing television subscriptions.
The notification also advised customers to visit their respective GOtv websites for further information.
GOtv Stream Service Comes to an End
GOtv Stream was introduced by MultiChoice in December 2023 as an additional benefit for its subscribers.
The application was designed to give customers greater flexibility by allowing them to access selected television content through internet-connected devices rather than relying exclusively on their television decoders.
According to MultiChoice’s original description of the service, subscribers could watch live television, access catch-up programmes, download selected content for offline viewing and create personalised profiles.
The platform also included features such as a television guide, watchlists and personalised content recommendations.
Access required an active GOtv subscription, a compatible device, a MultiChoice account and an internet connection.
The service was particularly useful to subscribers who wanted to follow television programmes and sporting events while travelling or away from their homes.
Its discontinuation therefore removes an additional viewing option previously available to GOtv customers.
GOtv Subscriptions and Decoder Services Remain Unaffected
Despite the withdrawal of the streaming application, GOtv subscribers do not need to cancel their subscriptions or replace their existing decoders.
The notification accompanying the announcement specifically stated that customers’ GOtv subscriptions, packages and decoder services would not be affected.
This means the discontinuation is limited to the mobile streaming component rather than the company’s conventional digital terrestrial television service.
Subscribers can therefore continue accessing television channels through their GOtv decoders, subject to their active subscription packages.
The distinction is important because customers who previously used GOtv Stream may mistakenly believe that the entire GOtv service is being discontinued.
There has been no confirmation that MultiChoice intends to shut down the GOtv television service itself.
MultiChoice’s Wider Streaming Strategy
The decision comes amid significant changes to MultiChoice’s digital entertainment operations following its acquisition by French media company Canal+.
The company has been reviewing its streaming operations and the commercial sustainability of its digital platforms as competition intensifies across Africa’s entertainment market.
In March 2026, MultiChoice announced plans to discontinue Showmax after 11 years of operation.
The decision followed a review of the platform’s financial performance, with recurring losses identified as a major concern.
According to Reuters, the company considered Showmax’s substantial annual losses financially unsustainable.
The closure marked a significant change in MultiChoice’s strategy, particularly given Showmax’s position in Africa’s competitive video-on-demand market.
The subsequent discontinuation of GOtv Stream adds another development to the company’s ongoing restructuring of its digital entertainment services.
MultiChoice Considers New Digital Entertainment Offering
MultiChoice Nigeria has also indicated that it is considering a new streaming product following Showmax’s closure.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos in October 2026, MultiChoice Nigeria Chief Executive Officer Kemi Omotosho said the company was assessing the technology and platform required to deliver a new digital entertainment experience.
According to TheCable’s report, Omotosho acknowledged the significance of Showmax’s closure but said the company wanted its next digital product to offer a strong customer experience while remaining commercially sustainable.
She indicated that MultiChoice intended to return to the streaming market but would not announce a launch date before completing its assessment.
However, the reported plans for a new digital platform do not establish that GOtv Stream will be replaced directly by another application.
MultiChoice has not publicly confirmed a specific replacement for GOtv Stream or provided a definitive timeline for restoring its former mobile streaming functionality.
What the Discontinuation Means for GOtv Subscribers
The withdrawal of GOtv Stream has different implications for customers depending on how they use the service.
Subscribers who primarily watch television through their decoders can continue using their existing GOtv services without changes arising from the streaming discontinuation.
However, customers who depended on the application to watch programmes on their smartphones and tablets will lose access to that particular service.
The development may also raise questions about alternative streaming arrangements for subscribers who want to access GOtv content outside their homes.
Although MultiChoice operates other digital entertainment platforms, the availability of particular channels and programmes depends on the relevant subscription, country and service arrangements.
Customers should therefore consult official GOtv or MultiChoice communication in their respective countries before assuming that another application provides the same benefits.
Why the Decision Matters for Africa’s Pay-TV Market
The discontinuation highlights the changing economics of digital television and streaming services across Africa.
Pay-TV operators are increasingly required to balance traditional television subscriptions with the growing demand for mobile viewing, online entertainment and flexible access to content.
For African consumers, smartphones have become an important channel for accessing news, sports, movies and television programmes.
Consequently, removing a mobile streaming service may affect customers who value the convenience of watching television without being physically connected to their home decoders.
For MultiChoice, the challenge will be to maintain customer value while restructuring its digital operations and managing the costs associated with competing in the streaming market.
The company’s decisions involving Showmax and GOtv Stream suggest a broader reassessment of how its entertainment products are delivered across its African markets.
Nevertheless, the long-term impact will depend on whether MultiChoice introduces alternative digital services capable of meeting subscribers’ expectations.
What Happens Next?
GOtv subscribers can continue using their existing decoder services, but those who relied on GOtv Stream will need to consider other officially supported viewing arrangements.
MultiChoice’s broader streaming strategy remains an important development to watch, particularly following the closure of Showmax and the company’s indication that it is evaluating another digital entertainment product.
For now, the discontinuation of GOtv Stream marks the end of a mobile viewing service introduced in December 2023, while the traditional GOtv television business continues operating.
MultiChoice has yet to provide a publicly confirmed replacement specifically for the discontinued GOtv Stream application.
