The University of Ibadan (UI) has retained its position as Nigeria’s leading university in the latest AD Scientific Index, while Nigeria has strengthened its presence in the global research landscape.

The latest 2027-season data from the AD Scientific Index, updated on October 1, 2026, places Nigeria 48th among 221 countries worldwide and third in Africa, with 384 institutions and 53,581 indexed scientists.

The ranking evaluates universities and researchers using academic indicators including the H-index, i10-index and total citations. Its institutional data are updated on a near-real-time basis, meaning positions can change as researcher profiles and underlying data are updated.

University of Ibadan leads Nigerian universities

The University of Ibadan remains Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution in the AD Scientific Index.

The latest institutional data place UI at about 889th globally in the relevant institutional ranking and first among Nigerian institutions, with 1,586 indexed scientists.

The university’s position places it within the AD Scientific Index’s global top 1,500 institutions. The ranking is based substantially on the research performance of scholars associated with each institution rather than simply the size of the university.

UI’s continued position at the top of Nigeria’s list highlights the long-standing role of the institution in the country’s research and higher-education system.

Nigeria records wider research presence

The AD Scientific Index data show that Nigeria’s research footprint extends well beyond a small group of universities.

The country now has 384 institutions and 53,581 indexed scientists, according to the latest update. Nigeria ranks 48th globally and third in Africa in the index’s country rankings.

The number of indexed researchers is particularly significant because the index tracks individual academic performance as well as institutional performance.

However, the figures should not be interpreted as a complete measurement of every Nigerian researcher. The AD Scientific Index explains that its database relies on publicly available academic information and does not seek to automatically include every researcher with a public Google Scholar profile.

Federal universities dominate leading positions

Federal universities continue to feature prominently among Nigeria’s strongest institutions in the AD Scientific Index.

The University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Bayero University are among the institutions highlighted in the supplied report.

The concentration of highly cited researchers in federal universities reflects the substantial research capacity built over several decades within Nigeria’s older public university system.

It also illustrates an important distinction between the number of institutions participating in research and the depth of research impact generated by individual universities and academics.

Nigerian researchers record significant citation impact

The latest figures also draw attention to individual Nigerian scholars whose work has attracted substantial international citations.

Among the researchers highlighted in the report is Mayowa Owolabi of the University of Ibadan, who was identified as Nigeria’s most-cited researcher, with more than 257,000 citations in the reported data.

Shafiu Mohammed of Ahmadu Bello University was also highlighted among Nigeria’s most-cited researchers, while Olayinka Ilesanmi of the University of Ibadan was listed among the country’s leading scholars by citations.

Such figures are important because citations are one of the indicators used by the AD Scientific Index to assess research influence.

At the same time, citation totals alone do not necessarily capture every dimension of academic quality. Research rankings use different methodologies, and institutions can perform differently depending on whether a ranking emphasises citations, teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook or other indicators.

Nigeria’s research challenge is now about depth

The latest figures present a mixed picture of Nigeria’s research development.

On one hand, the country has a large and growing number of indexed researchers and institutions. On the other, the distribution of research impact remains uneven.

The report cited in the supplied material argues that Nigeria’s next challenge is not simply increasing the number of institutions and researchers included in international databases, but strengthening the depth and impact of research produced by its strongest universities.

That distinction matters because a larger research population does not automatically translate into greater international research influence.

For Nigerian universities seeking stronger positions globally, factors such as high-impact publications, international collaboration, research funding, postgraduate training, citation performance and the development of specialised research centres can all affect their international visibility.

THE ranking provides a separate perspective

The AD Scientific Index results come shortly after the publication of the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which provide a different assessment of Nigerian higher education.

THE placed 29 Nigerian universities in its 2027 rankings, compared with 24 in the previous edition. Three Nigerian institutions — Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos — were placed in the 801–1000 global band.

This means the two ranking systems should not be treated as interchangeable.

While the AD Scientific Index places particular emphasis on researchers’ scholarly metrics, THE evaluates universities across broader areas including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

Consequently, a university’s position in one ranking does not necessarily translate directly into the same position in another.

What the latest figures mean for Nigerian universities

The latest research rankings provide evidence of continued academic activity across Nigeria’s university system.

For institutions such as the University of Ibadan, maintaining a leading position reflects the continuing research contribution of their academic communities.

For the wider Nigerian university system, however, the larger issue is how to convert an expanding pool of researchers into stronger research outputs, greater international collaboration and sustained global academic influence.

The increase in Nigerian universities appearing in international rankings also indicates that more institutions are becoming visible in global assessments. THE’s latest ranking, for example, included five Nigerian institutions that were not ranked in its previous edition.

Ranking data should be read with context

Academic rankings can provide useful comparisons, but they measure specific indicators rather than every aspect of university performance.

The AD Scientific Index itself describes its rankings as continuously updated, meaning institutional and researcher positions can change as new information enters the system.

For readers, the latest figures therefore offer a snapshot of Nigeria’s research landscape rather than a permanent assessment of university quality.

The broader picture is that Nigerian universities continue to expand their presence in international academic rankings, while institutions such as the University of Ibadan remain prominent in research-based assessments.

For Nigeria, the next stage will depend not only on how many universities and scientists are represented internationally, but also on the quality, visibility and global impact of the research they produce.
