Hussaini Yusuf Datti, the newly elected All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa State Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, has pledged to provide effective representation for his constituents and avoid being a passive member of the legislature.
Datti made the commitment after assuming his legislative responsibilities following his victory in the September 19, 2026, Dawakin Kudu/Warawa State Constituency by-election.
The APC candidate secured 22,890 votes in the election, according to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His closest challenger, Habib Hamisu of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), received 270 votes.
Datti Takes Over Vacant Assembly Seat
Datti’s emergence followed a vacancy in the Kano State House of Assembly created by the movement of former representative Shuaibu Rabiu Nagoggo, popularly known as Abba Gano, to the House of Representatives.
Nagoggo had previously represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa constituency in the state legislature before winning the federal constituency by-election that moved him to the National Assembly.
The federal seat became vacant following the death of Alhaji Muhammad Hassan, who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa in the House of Representatives. Hassan died in Abuja on April 10, 2026, aged 66.
The resulting sequence of vacancies led to the September 19 state assembly by-election.
The APC’s Kano State organisation also lists Yusuf Datti Hussain as its elected candidate for the Dawakin Kudu constituency.
Pledges Effective Representation
The new lawmaker has pledged to make active representation a central part of his tenure, signalling his intention to engage directly with issues affecting residents of the constituency.
His pledge comes as he begins legislative duties in the Kano State House of Assembly, where he is expected to participate in debates, legislative processes and constituency-related activities.
Rather than simply occupying the seat, Datti said his focus would be on delivering representation that responds to the needs and concerns of the people he now represents.
His commitment to avoiding the role of a “bench warmer” reflects an emphasis on participation and visibility in legislative affairs.
For constituents, effective representation can involve raising local concerns before the legislature, supporting relevant legislation, engaging government agencies and maintaining communication with communities.
Election Result
INEC’s declaration showed that Datti won the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa contest with 22,890 votes.
The PRP candidate, Habib Hamisu, polled 270 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Abdullahi Adamu, received 108 votes.
Other candidates included Bala Mohammed-Sani of the Action Democratic Party, who secured 89 votes; Aliyu Abdullahi of the All Peoples Party, who received 53 votes; and Labour Party candidate Abubakar Yahya-Mohammed, who polled 39 votes.
The returning officer, Ibrahim Tajo-Suraj, declared Datti elected after the completion of collation and said the APC candidate had met the legal requirements and obtained the highest number of votes cast.
The result therefore filled the vacant Dawakin Kudu/Warawa seat in the Kano State House of Assembly.
How the Vacancy Emerged
The circumstances surrounding the election were linked to developments at both state and federal legislative levels.
Nagoggo, the previous state assembly representative, moved to the House of Representatives after winning the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election.
That federal by-election itself followed the death of Hassan, who had previously occupied the federal seat.
With Nagoggo leaving the state legislature, the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa State Constituency seat became vacant and required another election.
The September poll consequently produced a new representative in the person of Datti.
Why the Representation Matters
The Kano State House of Assembly is responsible for state-level legislative functions, including lawmaking, oversight and consideration of matters affecting governance within the state.
For Dawakin Kudu/Warawa residents, the new lawmaker’s role will therefore extend beyond attending legislative sessions.
