Former Olympic heavyweight gold medallist and WBO heavyweight champion Ray Mercer is expected in Lagos for the second season of the Street Rumble Boxing competition, scheduled for December 13, 2026.
The grassroots boxing event is expected to take place in Ajegunle, Lagos, under the theme “The Movement Continues; The Street Speak.” Organisers say the competition is designed to identify emerging Nigerian boxing talent and provide young fighters with opportunities to develop towards professional and international competition.
Ray Mercer to feature in Street Rumble Season 2
Mercer’s involvement was announced by Mike Adeyemo, Chief Executive Officer of Matchmakers International Sports, during a press conference in Lagos.
Adeyemo said the organisers had partnered with Mercer and expected his participation to help strengthen the second edition of the competition.
Mercer is a notable figure in heavyweight boxing. He won the heavyweight gold medal for the United States at the 1988 Olympic Games and captured the WBO heavyweight world title in 1991.
His professional career also included a memorable fifth-round knockout of Tommy Morrison in 1991 while defending his WBO heavyweight title.
The former champion later faced some of the biggest names in heavyweight boxing, including Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.
Street Rumble targets grassroots boxing talent
According to the organisers, Street Rumble was created to take competitive boxing closer to communities and provide opportunities for fighters who may not otherwise have access to major platforms.
Adeyemo said the initiative is particularly focused on discovering young Nigerian boxers capable of competing at higher levels.
The organisers also said the programme is intended to encourage young people to pursue sport rather than drugs and other social vices.
The second season is expected to feature more than eight bouts, although the final number of participants had not been confirmed at the time of the August announcement. Different weight categories are expected to be represented, with female boxers also included in the programme.
Lagos provides a grassroots setting
Ajegunle has a long association with sports and has produced athletes across different disciplines. Ralph George, an official of the Anambra State Football Association and a ring announcer at the first Street Rumble event, described the decision to stage the competition in the community as an important part of its grassroots character.
George also referenced the area’s boxing history, including the late Nigerian boxing champion Obisia Nwankpa.
The organisers have indicated that Season 2 will feature a stronger card than the inaugural edition, although the complete list of bouts and participating fighters is yet to be formally announced.
Lagos sports authorities back initiative
The Lagos State Sports Commission has also expressed support for the Street Rumble project.
Ifeoluwa Ogunlaja, representing the commission’s Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, said the commission had endorsed the initiative.
The commission’s support reflects the organisers’ stated objective of using sport as a platform for youth engagement while creating pathways for talented athletes.
Mike Adeyemo said the competition would continue to focus on developing fighters from the grassroots and giving them a platform from which they can pursue professional careers.
Why Mercer’s involvement matters
Mercer’s planned appearance gives the event an opportunity to connect young Nigerian fighters with a former Olympic champion and world heavyweight titleholder.
His career provides a direct example of the pathway from amateur boxing to the highest levels of professional competition. His Olympic success came in 1988, before he captured the WBO heavyweight championship three years later.
For Street Rumble, the organisers’ emphasis remains on talent discovery rather than simply staging a boxing card.
The competition is therefore positioned as both a sporting event and a grassroots development initiative, with organisers hoping to identify fighters who can eventually represent Nigeria internationally.

Street Rumble Season 2 is scheduled for December 13, 2026, with the theme “The Movement Continues; The Street Speak.”
The organisers are expected to announce the full fight card, participating boxers and other event details ahead of the competition.
Prize money for winners had not been announced when the organisers spoke publicly about the event in August.
Mercer’s expected participation is also subject to the event arrangements announced by the organisers. The available reports confirm that he was expected to attend and participate in the project, rather than indicating that he would compete in a professional bout at the event.
The December event will provide another test of the organisers’ ambition to build a sustainable grassroots boxing platform in Lagos while giving emerging Nigerian fighters greater exposure.
