Residents of Arepo in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State are facing another electricity disruption amid a wider power supply crisis that has affected the community for months.
The latest outage has added to growing concerns among residents and businesses that rely on electricity for household activities, commercial operations and essential services.
Reports circulating about the latest disruption have attributed the outage to damage involving electricity infrastructure. However, Weng Global could not independently verify the specific claim that a shattered insulator damaged a Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) facility at the time of publication.
Arepo’s prolonged electricity crisis
The latest disruption comes against the backdrop of a much longer electricity supply problem in Arepo.
Residents have repeatedly complained about prolonged outages and inadequate power supply in the community, which is served by Ikeja Electric.
In September 2026, residents under the Concerned Residents of Arepo said they had experienced extremely poor electricity supply for about four months. According to their account, the community had at times received barely two hours of electricity daily.
The residents also said the situation had affected businesses and households and threatened to pursue legal means of redress if the problem was not addressed.
The Sun similarly reported in September that Arepo residents and other affected communities had petitioned Ikeja Electric over prolonged outages, saying repeated disruptions had caused difficulties for households and businesses.
Electricity infrastructure remains a concern
The latest incident also highlights the vulnerability of electricity infrastructure serving rapidly growing communities around the Lagos-Ogun corridor.
In August, a truck accidentally pulled down a high-tension electricity line serving the WiseBuyers Supermarket Distribution Transformer in Arepo, according to a report by The PUNCH.
The incident damaged two electricity poles and left electrical cables hanging dangerously low. Community representatives subsequently warned residents and road users to stay away from the affected area while repairs were being undertaken.
Ikeja Electric’s publicly available network fault records also show that the Arepo area is connected to the 33-OKE-ARO-TCN-AKUTE network, with Arepo appearing among areas supplied through the network.
Residents demand lasting solution
The continuing disruptions have intensified calls for a more durable solution rather than repeated temporary restoration of electricity.
In May, the News Agency of Nigeria reported that concerned residents and business owners from Arepo staged a peaceful protest at Ikeja Electric’s office in Alausa over prolonged poor electricity supply.
The protest group said some parts of the community received only between two and five hours of electricity daily and called for explanations and improvements to the network.
The repeated complaints indicate that the community’s electricity challenges extend beyond a single outage.
They have involved concerns over supply levels, network faults, damaged infrastructure and the adequacy of electricity infrastructure serving the rapidly developing area.
Why the outage matters
Electricity interruptions have consequences beyond households being left without power.
Small businesses that depend on refrigeration, machinery, computers and other electrical equipment can face financial losses when electricity supply becomes unreliable.
Residents may also be forced to rely on generators or other alternative sources of power, increasing operating costs at a time when households and businesses are already facing higher energy expenses.
The situation is particularly significant for Arepo because of the community’s continued growth and its connection to the wider Lagos-Ogun economic corridor.

The precise cause and expected duration of the latest outage should be confirmed by the relevant electricity authorities before being reported as established fact.
Weng Global has not found a current official statement from the Transmission Company of Nigeria or Ikeja Electric confirming that a shattered insulator caused the latest Arepo outage.

The immediate priority remains the safe repair of affected infrastructure and restoration of electricity to customers, while the longer-term challenge is ensuring that the network serving Arepo can adequately support the community’s growing population and economic activity.
The latest outage has once again placed Arepo’s electricity crisis in focus, but the community’s complaints show that the problem predates the current disruption and requires a sustained infrastructure and service response.
